Latest Updates
The route quickly finds the towpath of the Selby canal (photo 2) and I enjoyed this 3-mile section which was busy with families and dog walkers (photo 3). For the 5 miles from Hambleton to just before South Milford the route uses tarmac byways and field paths through farmland (photo 10). From the pretty village of South Milford the route follows the road, but this felt pedestrian-friendly due to the wide pavement and off-road cycle lane (photo 14) all the way into Sherburn (photo 15)....

Yorkie Christine added Shesel four, a new walk from Sherburn in Elmet to Selby
Walk this routeThe two miles along the main road between Hambleton and Thorpe Willoughby (A63 and A1238) has a pavement all the way, and while it is necessary to cross over in one village and back in the next, and again over the roundabout, there are traffic islands in all these places enabling this to be done safely. There are bus routes between Sherburn and South Milford and also along the main road between Hambleton, Thorpe Willoughby and Selby. Of the pubs en route, at least some were open as I passed including the Owl in Hambleton and the Fox in Thorpe Willoughby....

Yorkie Christine added Shesel three, a new walk from Sherburn in Elmet to Selby
Walk this routeThere are a few gates on the route and two stiles, the stile south of Low Rest Park Farm being difficult for dogs as it is without a “dog gate”. Fourthly, the route follows the busy A road (the A1238 and the A63) between Hambleton and Thorpe Willoughby and crosses it four times. In Thorpe Willoughby and Hambleton villages there are islands in the middle of the road to make crossing safer, but in order to use the shortcut which bypasses the roundabout to the north, two more crossings are required in places without traffic islands (photo 12). In terms of facilities, buses run between Sherburn and South Milford and also along the main road between Hambleton, Thorpe Willoughby and Selby....

I did some exploring around Sherburn-in-Elmet today and can confirm that there is no access across the airfield, despite it looking from the Ordnance Survey that the two public footpaths across and round the airfield have been officially rerouted. The right of way is also blocked in the industrial estate east of the airfield. An alternative possible route from Sherburn to Lennerton House Farm via the B1222 Bishopdike Road is not viable as the road is fast, busy and lacks pavement or verge for more than a mile....

I left Tadcaster heading south, but in fact went east for about 3 miles along the River Wharfe. The path is clear enough and attractive, but being May was quite overgrown, which made it tiring. The rest of the path is quite clear, passing a golf course, church, care home and a couple of tiny villages....
Andrew Davies
It has a shop and drinks and then leads to a direct scenic bridle path north to Ledsham....

This route felt very road-heavy again, with times where you are walking on the road without there being a footpath. With that, I wouldn’t recommend the route if you have small children, or like me, you are struggling with blisters the size of cats and there doesn’t seem to many places to sit down for a while. In terms of scenery, the residential areas are very nice and the fields stretching on for miles are lovely at the time we were walking (and it wasn’t raining!)....

A nice enough walk from Sherburn taking in A roads then into fields which was nice to see wildlife - hares and kites. Lots of fields before entering selby. Market on Saturdays....

Hambleton to crossing the trainline via Dam Lane is all concrete and the pedestrian footpath disappears after crossing the railway....
Lora
This was probably my favourite part of the walk - as it was a real mixture of terrain and it was at times beautiful....

The first half of the route out of Sherburn in Elmet is complicated and problematic around rail lines and access. After Hambleton, there is considerable road walking along the A63, a fast busy road, with a need to cross the road on a couple of occasions, with no safe crossings....
Monika
There were access issues here and we had to divert around a field and across a freshly turned field where we had to ridge hop due to very deep furrows - slow progress and not at all accessible at this time of year - I imagine when the field is in crop, there would be tractor tramlines to follow, making it a bit easier but not for any form of wheels....
Monika
Walking through the fields after Mickelfield was fun but it became quickly confusing as we were meant to continue straight but were faced with a crossroads (see Lotherton/Huddleston picture) because the path going straight has a private property barrier....
Lora
Lots of fields which were quite muddy and signposting became tricky....

Slow Ways Connections added Garshe two, a new walk from Garforth to Sherburn in Elmet
Walk this routeDo not go in the yard look for a small path next to the field fence between the nettles, on the right as you look at it. When crossing the massive field before the hall aim for the outbuilding, walk down the side , through the gate and along the path....

Quite a lot of on-road walking on the approach to Sherburn (no pavements) prevents 4 or 5 star...

Other parts of the route didn’t seem to exist as accessible public rights of way or were visible but not passable....

There is no public access across Sherburn airfield as shown on the map, access is currently blocked and there is no safe diversion at present....
