Help connect New Ollerton

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of New Ollerton’s Slow Ways.

The path that runs south south east from Sherwood Pines to the old railway is not continuous - there is a short gap near Eakring Road where a little ingenuity is needed to see the way forward, which involves stepping over a low but solid wooden fence, and. As noted before, there is no path forward where we hit the cycle trail, but I found a rough path a few meters right which crosses a low wooden fence to reach Eakring Road. Beyond we turn left and follow the railway to the edge of Rainworth, then take the signposted cycletrack which starts off heading east then doubles back alongside the main road to reach the road, which leads us easily into the centre of Rainworth.....

The area could offer a route shorter by two miles if services at Go Ape were not required and an additional stretch of roadside pavement was acceptable. There are discrepancies between the recorded path route and the available route north of Rainworth. The route here is well plotted even after we leave the definitive path which is a dead end, I wonder why? The plotted straight line to the main gate on the A614 is not available but the path on the ground should take us through the extensive refreshment area and then through the courtyard where the loos are located. Turning right at the exit from the buildings will take us back to the plotted route and avoid conflict with the car park. Back on the main route we pass a camp site after which, on the day of my visit, I had the track to myself. The rail line that served Bilsthorpe Colliery is now a cycle route so there are a number of alternative east west routes here but they all must lead to the disused north south rail route. The plot here offers one available route, the other is through the woodland neither appear to follow the definitive line as marked on OS maps....

A long route, enjoyable in places, but spoiled a little by some challenging poorly maintained field paths. The bridge over the stream takes some spotting through the undergrowth, and there is no sign of a path in the huge field beyond, and the crops are 3 to 4 feet high in places so this section is hard work (picture 6). The field path west is little used but easy enough to follow, and beyond the A616 Beesthorpe Hall dominates the view ahead. The Robin Hood way path takes a rather indirect route to reach North Laiths, where we leave it on another well maintained path that takes us into a railway cutting (more steps) and up to Wellow....

The path from Wellow to Eakring is easily followed. From Eakring to Maplebeck the path was muddy but easily followed. From Kelham Bridge the line of the path had at least been marked to start with (muddy, waterfilled tractor track) however approaching the rugby club ground there is a problem where somebody has dumped building waste across the line, and the kissing gate is now in the middle of a blackthorn thicket....

The road walk here is shared with a cycle track and the A46 crossing is light controlled but the Old Great North Road has only a refuge and traffic off the island can be an issue. Our path climbs to offer good views and after crossing a road the route enters an equestrian centre for race horses where we cross the practice course four times. The path crosses a stream by a hidden bridge then crosses a large field, the plot will guide you to the next bridge to cross another field to the road. Leaving the village the route is across pasture and there were cattle here before another crossing of the main road. More cross field and a high point with good views of the route ahead then farm tracks which lead into Wellow....

Thereafter there are cross-field paths to Wellow. There is a pavement leaving Wellow, and then a muddy lane leads to more cross-field paths. There is another set of steps into and out of the former railway cutting, and then several muddy cross-field paths to reach Eakring....

I walked this route from Rainworth to New Ollerton. I set out to walk Rainew 1 but there is an access issue at Rufford and I got lost trying to follow the Rainew1 route into Ollerton. The field paths could be muddy - they were when I walked the route. Watch out for the turn down the field to cross the Wellow - Rufford road before another muddy path to approach Ollerton....

After the third tight bend on the bridleway (SK 62868 68385) there is a wide track heading west down to the road. Straight across the road and follow the curving track through Robert's Plantation all the way to the major oak. This cuts out a mile of poor track....

Here we turn right, continue left towards Kirklington then right at the T junction and left along the footpath, initially a farm track then field paths with kissing gates. The path twists and turns along field edges (the Robin Hood signs are quite good so no real difficulty in route finding) up to a farm where we turn left through another arable field, across a large pasture and past another farm to follow a hedge down to a bridge. We go left along Bilsthorpe Road past a closed pub and the Daffodil tea room, then right along a lane to rejoin the Robin Hood Way. We then go steeply through a pasture field, over an old railway bridge and across another clay field to reach the farm road which we follow right. Just beyond a left turn past the farm, we leave the Robin Hood Way right using a good path along field edges. We follow the surfaced paths round to Edison Rise, where we go left, down past the Tesco entrance and the garage, then turn right along Newark Road to the New Ollerton meeting point, beyond the Nottingham/Mansfield bus stop....

This is a very good country walk with some excellent views, generally easy to follow well walked paths, no cattle noted in winter only sheep, mostly arable fields along headland but some cross field paths. Crossing the railway, now used as a test track, the path climbs the old, now tree covered, spoil heap on a track which later becomes a well walked path. The tall Maypole provides fame for the village as well as providing a name for the green and the inn. A little more pavement walking before an exit from the village along a green lane come farm track. A roadside bench by the church or picnic tables in the play area, as we exit the village, offer more limited facilities. The steady descent to the village passes through the parkland of Kirklington Hall now a school....

I started at New Ollerton a Slow Way hub I'd used some time back see https://beta.slowways.org/Route/Marnew/5144#reviews The route takes us quickly into the countryside with a well surfaced path alongside the River Maun. I had anticipated flooding along this river side path but all was well until approaching the first road here I found a firm route under the footbridge then a scramble up to the quiet road. The route meets the busy A614 but it's a good safe segregated path before a light controlled crossing. We then enter the huge National Trust Clumber Estate and for those on foot it's free admission. Finally leaving the park, although not the estate we continue along the RHW another well surfaced path through woodland. A bridge offers a safe crossing of the busy main road before a few domestic 'estate' roads at Manton, approaching Worksop....

This walk is easy to follow has a good firm improved surface along many paths over ground that is sandy and well drained so no mud but do read on. A five star route even though I was forced to divert on four occasions more on that later but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of this hike which has refreshments half way at the National Trust's popular Clumber Park. I had anticipated flooding along this river side path but all was well until approaching the first road here I found a firm route under the footbridge then a scramble up to the quiet road. The bridleway approaching Hardwick village is across pasture where docile cattle grazed. I can't comment on the plotted route through Hardwick village but the route I was forced to take was very pleasant and passed a refreshment and loo opportunity. A bridge offers a safe crossing of the busy main road before a few domestic 'estate' roads and issue four where a route has not been available through the grounds of a modern church since 2009, but an easy road option is available, see Wornew-2 especially if leaving Worksop....

Walked as the third part of a long three route walk from Shireoaks to Sutton on Trent via Market Warsop and New Ollerton. The route into Sutton is fine if rather unnecessarily indirect, but the detour does include a good viewpoint and avoids some road walking, albeit largely on tarmacked farm tracks....

The plotted route is good but needs care because the route sometimes leaves the obvious well walked path. The sign here points to a public bridleway but it's not on the map so no idea as yet where it goes (found it on http://www.rowmaps.com/ the path is now Bridleway Edwinstowe BW24). The path we follow is not recorded as public (see edit above) but available, it leaves the well surfaced path and become a narrow rutt perhaps popular with cyclists. The meeting place in Market Warsop is good with seats, shops and a bus stop close by....

The official Rainew route shown then goes along private roads in Rufford village with no direct access to Rufford Park as far as I know. Instead once you cross the A614 you should turn left to follow the pavement up to the main Rufford Park entrance where you turn right along the main driveway. This soon rejoins the official Rainew route which you follow past the main buildings and cafe area....

Instead you should go right at the pharmacy and go along Richmond Road to reach Cavendish Road. The official route along the quiet road was diverted when I walked it but should be restored soon.
