Hugh Hudson

05 Jul 2022 Summer

Walked as the third part of a long three route walk from Shireoaks to Sutton on Trent via Market Warsop and New Ollerton.

Most of this route is fine, but I have a few minor reservations. Firstly the route out of New Ollerton - I am not sure I understand the point of going through the business park (Edison Avenue/Darwin Drive), which is a little confusing and not clearly preferable to just walking along Rufford Avenue. The path along the north side of Wellow Wood is easy enough to follow but is unsurfaced and rutted in places, and looks as if it would get very muddy when wet. The road section up the hill towards Laxton is quite steep and has no pavements, so needs a degree of care. The path into Laxton from the west has been known to get rather overgrown (and was impassable when I tried to use it a few years ago) but is currently fine. No problems with the road into Moorhouse, which is a quiet lane. The route into Sutton is fine if rather unnecessarily indirect, but the detour does include a good viewpoint and avoids some road walking, albeit largely on tarmacked farm tracks. I don't think there were any steps or stiles, but there are sections on unsurfaced field paths that would be challenging to wheelchair users. Overall my impressions are positive, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to fitter walkers who can cope with the distance.

NOTE: ADD PHOTO LAYER ON MAP TO SEE LOCATIONS ALONG THE ROUTE.

We walked from New Ollerton to Sutton-on-Trent on a fine, sunny Spring day. It is a great walk; clearly signposted, dripping with history and lovely countryside.

The route begins in New Ollerton where you will almost immediately come across a large Tescos – ideal for breakfast or a toilet stop, a 10 minute walk takes you into fields and Wellow Park woods. This part of the walk is VERY muddy in places, I imagine that it would be hard work in the middle of winter. After the woods there was some roadside walking but the verges are wide and the road is extremely quiet. We walked past the Holocaust Centre and back onto fields and the sykes (medieval paths between fields) to get to Laxton. This was the next section of mud, but it was short.

We had lunch at Laxton, on a bench next to the Dovecote Inn – a very tempting refreshment stop!

The second half of the walk was as nice as the first, with clearly marked paths alongside fields. The walk through Moorhouse was roadside walking (again quiet) before heading back onto fields after the empty phonebox. We walked through the A1underpass and over a pedestrian rail crossing to get into Sutton.

Don’t let the odd dog-leg near Sutton put you off, this avoided a road and was one of the nicest parts of the walk.

This route was a very unexpected treat.
