23 Mar 2023I walked this route from Ollerton, in March, following a period of wet weather. A lot of the field paths were muddy. The route begins on the pavement down a main road and then cuts off through the 'energy village' on the pavements of the quiet roads. After the bridge over the railway the route follows a dog-walkers path not on the 1:25000 map, and picks up a RoW behind new-build housing. Thereafter there are cross-field paths to Wellow. At one point, crossing the old railway, there are steep steps into the cutting and back up the other side. Wellow has a pub (but not on route)
There is a pavement leaving Wellow, and then a muddy lane leads to more cross-field paths. There is another set of steps into and out of the former railway cutting, and then several muddy cross-field paths to reach Eakring. Pubs and a shop here. The church is worth a visit.
From here we follow the Robin Hood Way across fields to Mansey Common Wood and Dillner Wood. These woodland paths were wet and/or muddy. Then more field paths to bring us to the grounds of Kirklington Hall school. After crossing the main A617 (carefully) there are lanes and paths to reach the former railway at Osmanthorpe picnic area. The good surface of the rail trail brings us to the edge of Southwell and then estate roads and urban paths lead to the Minster.
A thoroughly enjoyable route.
