Help connect Market Warsop

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Market Warsop’s Slow Ways.

We cross the bridge and go right around the pond on another good track then join the path along an old railway. The plot suggests going straight up to the top of the second bridge - the bank on the north side was too steep for me to attempt but just beyond the bridge an easier one works (picture 12 - or a little further on there is a proper cycle path - it is also possible to follow the old railway cycle paths all the way into Sherwood Pines, and this would be a slightly shorter route). Our track crosses another old colliery railway and heads into Sherwood Pines, where we take the NCN 6 track south before it zigzags to reach the Blidworth colliery railway path, which we cross and use more forest tracks to exit the SW corner of the wood, where we follow a good track under an old railway bridge to join yet another old colliery railway path towards Rainworth....

Here we follow the path north parallel to the railway then take the roughly surfaced lane right that leads us into Sookholme, where a short section on or alongside a fairly busy rat run takes us to Sookholme Lane, a quiet byway mostly free of cars, which we follow past more housing development into Warsop....

There is a small section on the route in Sookholme where you have to walk next to the road for a short while (approx 1/4 mile possibly), you just have to be careful as it can get busy, but otherwise the route is very peaceful....

The exit main road has a pavement before moving to quiet estate roads via an unrecorded and unsigned path. On the south side I found the route a little confusing with so many tracks and old rail routes which had served the colliery. The orange dots on the map aren't helpful as there is no convenient link from the rail cuttings to the crossing paths. Perhaps there are plans to make the northern section of the rail route into Route 6 which should improve things. The approach to the next bit of old rail route is interesting. From here we follow the route which soon enters a cutting through hard sandstone. After the bridge under the A617 the plot is not correct - the path first heads east then doubles back over the bridge alongside but fenced from the busy road....

After the third tight bend on the bridleway (SK 62868 68385) there is a wide track heading west down to the road. Straight across the road and follow the curving track through Robert's Plantation all the way to the major oak. This cuts out a mile of poor track....

Crossing The road onto the pavement which also has a grass buffer strip between us and traffic it's a short walk to the next path which is a well surfaced but quiet cycleway into the site of what was Warsop Main Colliery, only old maps will confirm this as the area is now green and covered in trees....

There is a short distance of concessionary path to reach the entrance to the car park and Harley Gallery (refreshments). Across the lane and back onto the footpath to reach the slopes overlooking Cuckney Church and the water meadows. Over the hill through the partially felled woodland and then a long descent through the fields to reach the A60 approaching Church Warsop....

From here the bridleway heads up through the houses to the main road (shops), and then on residential pavements through the houses to reach Clipstone Drive, an unsurfaced lane along the hill crest. After 500m we turn northwards down the edge of the forest on the bridleway and after crossing the river Maun turn again alongside the river and some fishing ponds. After the final pond we turn northwards again to follow the bridleway up hill between two hedges....

I found the road walk out of Warsop a little dull - the west side of the road has pavements all the way but the one on the east side stops before the railway bridge....

Since I was starting from the station and had a long walk ahead of me, I missed out the short street walk from the centre of Shirebrook, but I have done that before and know that it is fine....

No cattle, generally good surfaced tracks but two stiles at rail level crossing and tracks are Byways so there could be motorised traffic although I saw none....

Meeting point at Mansfield Woodhouse is poor as station is on edge of settlement so I've amended this route to meet the High Street for shops and buses....

The plotted route is good but needs care because the route sometimes leaves the obvious well walked path. The sign here points to a public bridleway but it's not on the map so no idea as yet where it goes (found it on http://www.rowmaps.com/ the path is now Bridleway Edwinstowe BW24). The path we follow is not recorded as public (see edit above) but available, it leaves the well surfaced path and become a narrow rutt perhaps popular with cyclists. The meeting place in Market Warsop is good with seats, shops and a bus stop close by....

We must cross under the railway and follow the obvious path down to the river bridge and up to Littlewood farm. The path is obvious, but not quite where the slow ways route track says it should be. At the obvious gravelled track, turn away from the railway towards Sookholme....
