Hugh Hudson

Walked from Woodhouse to Warsop. A good route, mostly off road, entirely on good tracks apart from a short section of narrow path either side of the level crossing north of the Meden. The short road section at Sookholme needs a little care as the road can be busy.

From Mansfield Woodhouse's badly situated meeting point on the west side of the station, we cross the railway on the station bridge and descend to the main platforms (there is a choice of steps and ramps here). The path out of the north end of the platform is obvious, but is a little less straight than the plot. An easy pavement walk takes us into Sutton's centre and back out of the northern suburbs onto Littlewood Lane, which is separated from the railway by a large disused quarry, whose protective fence-cum-hedge prevents more than occasional glimpses into it. We cross the railway and follow the lane round to the right and over the Meden, then take the little path that crosses the railway (two metal stiles and a few steps) and enters the old colliery country park.

Here we follow the path north parallel to the railway then take the roughly surfaced lane right that leads us into Sookholme, where a short section on or alongside a fairly busy rat run takes us to Sookholme Lane, a quiet byway mostly free of cars, which we follow past more housing development into Warsop. A few more pavements take us to the meeting point on High Street.

Completed this route last week on a sunny day. Easy to follow and very pleasant, the path along Shirebrook Wood has lots of wild flowers and butterflies. There is a point where you have to cross a railway line, so be mindful of that.
There is a small section on the route in Sookholme where you have to walk next to the road for a short while (approx 1/4 mile possibly), you just have to be careful as it can get busy, but otherwise the route is very peaceful.

Market Warsop to Mansfield Woodhouse on a hot sunny day. Generally easy to follow on the ground. Plot now shows actual route at Littlewood where a double crossing of the railway is required. No cattle, generally good surfaced tracks but two stiles at rail level crossing and tracks are Byways so there could be motorised traffic, although I saw none. No services on route and little of any interest. Meeting point at Mansfield Woodhouse is poor as station is on edge of settlement so I've amended this route to meet the High Street for shops and buses.
