Help connect Tewkesbury
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Tewkesbury’s Slow Ways.

There is also one point on Severn Lane in Gloucester where a canal is crossed on a narrow road bridge without a pavement - anyone who feels this is too unsafe can use the next canal bridge south at the cost of a short detour. From the junction at the centre of Tewkesbury, we follow Church Street south past the abbey gate and continue along Gloucester Road, then follow the Severn Way sign right down Lower Lode Lane. The new Severn Way route across the bridge is clearly signposted here, and there is a pub beyond the bridge which can be accessed via the road or by a shortcutting flight of steps. At the end of the field we follow the lane up past a gate then take the clear path left along the top of the bank. We cross the road and turn left over the Severn Bridge, then follow the cycle track below the road, parts of which use boards over the river. Either way we cross the footbridge to reach Severn Road, and we follow the road over the narrow swing bridge over the canal, then turn right along Commercial Road, which we can cross on a pelican crossing with rainbow markings. We ignore the signposted route straight ahead and stay on Commercial Road until Ladybellegate Street, then take the alleyway right to reach Southgate Street and the Gloucester meeting point, where there are a few benches on the pedestrianised street....

Just beyond the left turn where we cross a stream and enter Gloucestershire, we turn right along a bridleway that goes through fields by the old railway, then goes further right across more open fields to a farm where the bridleway turns left and our path continues straight on on an enclosed lane and then through woods. Eventually we reach a surfaced road, where we go right a short distance to join the river path on the left, which we follow to Mythe Bridge. We are forced to head back north by the river Avon, which we cross on the main road bridge, then head down steps onto the island and past the Avon lock to a footbridge, which we cross then go right a short distance before turning left up Smith's Lane and up an alley to High Street, where we turn right to reach the meeting point by the museum just beyond the junction (those with time to spare should continue down Church Street to see the Abbey)....

Walk this routeI will give it a qualified thumbs up, as most of it is enjoyable, but the section through the quarry workings needs updating to reflect the diversion route and there are a couple of other places where the plotting is a bit too loose, so I have submitted UPTTEW 3, which unlike UPTTEW 2 retains the original route under Mythe Bridge and past the water works on the Severn Way. For a more detailed review with pictures see UPTTEW 3....

Walk this routeOn the day I walked it I couldn't obviously see access under (or down from) Mythe Bridge (A438), so I decided to make use of the footpath to the east of Mythe Road (A38) instead....

Very enjoyable walk, beautiful views of the Severn and Malvern hills. Even the bit that goes through a working quarry was a little bit exciting. Plenty of lovely pubs at either end, there is one at Ripple (The Railway) but wasn't open when I went....
