Help connect Gloucester
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Gloucester’s Slow Ways.

I walked all of this route except for the road section from Flaxley, Grid Ref: 693151, to Boseley, Grid Ref: 708156, when I walked CinGlo Three, see my review of that for details. I can see from Daisy’s review of CinGlo Two that this section was fine in February 2024, and Google Street View (only from August 2018 though) shows it to be clear, and today it was all included in Google’s SatNav routing, and it’s a fully tarmacked road, so it’s likely to be walkable, but I can only 99% guarantee I could walk it!...

I haven’t walked all of this route, but I have walked the whole of CinGlo Three and the blocked section at Boseley Mill Farm is included in this route, so currently this route isn’t viable. See my review of CinGlo Three for details. The A48 crossing at the River Severn doesn’t look great, although it is part of the Gloucester Way....

I haven’t walked all of this route, but I have walked the whole of CinGlo Three and the blocked section at Boseley Mill Farm is included in this route, so currently this route isn’t viable. It also attempts to cross from Chestnuts Hill to Welshbury Wood at Grid Ref: 678151 which I had tried to do, it's not a PRoW and it is very definitely blocked by a secure gate. The A48 crossing point on reaching the River Severn doesn’t look the safest place, either (see Google Street View screenshots)....

The field boundary crossing between the road and former railway line at Grid Ref 710157 was a bit tricky to find - two stiles with an overgrown patch between them – but it was manageable, and the narrow bridge over the stream was fine. After this, things improved and we had another quiet country road section, followed by a level crossing and some gravel lanes. There was a wide pavement alongside a bit more A48 before we escaped over the old Thomas Telford road bridge and then the last bit of the route, which followed a pleasant cycle track through Alney Island Nature Reserve before heading through the lovely remodelled docks area to the end of the route in the middle of the shops. This was quite a pleasant route, with a mix of fields and country lanes, but the problems at Boseley Mill Farm mean it needs to be failed for now....

Walk this routeDuring the final approach to Newent across the agricultural land the natural path differs slightly from the route and leads you slightly South arriving at a small playing field before you take a right onto Meek Road to pick up the Slow Ways route down into the centre of Newent....

The route suggests you follow this to the end, and then head diagonally across a field on a footpath. After this, things progress pretty much as the route suggests, following field edges, ducking through small woods, and walking some shortish sections of roads. At this point the route and the OS map make it look like you want a fork to the right, but you actually follow the main track through the gate, then take a right turn after 10-15 metres - it is fairly obvious there isn't a right fork, but can make you think you have missed it. When you come to the field with the pylons - you are heading across the field to the first of a couple of footbridges, through a young woodland, then on to the next footbridge - it is not that obvious, but head for the low concrete footbridges (Photo13) under the power lines and you will be right. Here, again the maps show a diagonal path across a field to the farm, but the more obvious route is up a grass verge between two field (Photo5), up to the farm track and follow it round to the left through the farm yard. Here you can carry straight on up the footpath opposite, or follow the route to the right down to Maidenhall - there is a small shop and post office here if you need refreshments. The route suggests skirting round the woods, but the suggested footpath wasn't obvious, so I diverted across the playing fields into the woods themselves, and down the hill to meet up with the Wysis/Three Counties again, and then the Sustrans route 45 cycle path. You then get you head down for a short stint along the A40, before following the route 45 cycle path under the A40 across to Telford's Bridge across the Severn (Photo4)....

I visited the area in February 2024 and was only able to walk half the route, from Flaxley to Cinderford, due to majorly waterlogged ground throughout Gloucestershire before my trip. I couldn't achieve the daily distances I had planned and the low lying part of this route was sacrificed to the rain gods.. Get to the small waterfall in Flaxley (photo 5) from the bridge in the field after the church....

Walk this routeAccording to a local news site works blocking the Gloucester station underpass were still going in December 2024. Liked the footpath that ends at Luke Lane but deliberately missed the riverside section near the A40, wary after a tiring riverside flooded/muddy section of previous walk that day, used Park Ave instead which was fine....

The bit through robinswood park was impossible to navigate, there didn't seem to be any maps to help you and many of the paths were just a muddy slope....

It's an extremely easy route, as the entire walk is on flat roads. I was chatting with a friend the whole way, and before I knew it, we had reached Brockworth! Brockworth is a great place to stop for a rest and pick up some supplies at the nearby Co-op....

A safe and pleasant route through the town with well-connected pedestrian road and a footbridge. It is simple to follow and it’s perfect for a leisure walk. A shop near the end of the route is available for resupply....

We adjusted the original Globro One to cross under the railway safely and over the A38 motorway, as well as after encountering a couple of dead ends. I've mistakenly forgot to include the footbridge crossing over the A38, but it'll be pretty obvious when you come to it! This is not necessarily scenic, but it is easy to navigate and probably the best way between the two destinations, so 3 stars....

Walk this routeI found the centre of Gloucester to be a little disappointing, as the route passed some once splendid, but now run down, buildings; and some groups of people who seemed to be recovering from a heavy Saturday night; and an awful lot of building work going on. There was quite clever use of off-road footpaths, with several cycle barriers, for the first 40% of the route, but then 20% of the route followed a fairly main suburban road through Longlevens that was a bit boring....

However, the downhill path out of the park was a narrow, overgrown trail branching off from the main path, making it easy to miss....

The route out of the woodland is pretty easy to spot, but from there we followed Hugh's detailed notes and were able to find the right way for the most part. The rest of the walk to Stonehouse was pretty relaxed and straightforward, some on road and other bits through some wildflower meadows....

Walking from Gloucester to Frampton, I'd suggest not departing the towpath just before Quedgeley but staying on it all the way to Frampton. I would also stay on the towpath and enter Frampton from Bridge Road as opposed to Church Lane....

2) when you approach Whaddon (a couple of fields on from the above point) the Slowways route takes you past the farm on to the main road, turns left and then after a short distance on the road you go left again on a footpath BUT you can avoid going to the road and follow a footpath behind the farm instead and still reach the same point. On the ground there is a foot bridge taking you into the field going behind the farm and it is clearly signed. 3) after you have crossed under the M5 and walked through fields then a farm (Brentlands on the OS map) back on to a road, there is a short section of road walking before you get to the footpath to Brookthorpe. Take care here as it is a busy road, with blind corners and not much space to get off the road. There isn’t alternative way around this due to the motorway. 4) Past Brookthorpe - don’t turn left into the field marked Withyrows too soon - you need to carry on past the farmer’s track to reach the path route. I accidentally turned up the farmers straight track and had to walk back to find the route out of the field....

There is also one point on Severn Lane in Gloucester where a canal is crossed on a narrow road bridge without a pavement - anyone who feels this is too unsafe can use the next canal bridge south at the cost of a short detour. From the junction at the centre of Tewkesbury, we follow Church Street south past the abbey gate and continue along Gloucester Road, then follow the Severn Way sign right down Lower Lode Lane. The new Severn Way route across the bridge is clearly signposted here, and there is a pub beyond the bridge which can be accessed via the road or by a shortcutting flight of steps. At the end of the field we follow the lane up past a gate then take the clear path left along the top of the bank. We cross the road and turn left over the Severn Bridge, then follow the cycle track below the road, parts of which use boards over the river. Either way we cross the footbridge to reach Severn Road, and we follow the road over the narrow swing bridge over the canal, then turn right along Commercial Road, which we can cross on a pelican crossing with rainbow markings. We ignore the signposted route straight ahead and stay on Commercial Road until Ladybellegate Street, then take the alleyway right to reach Southgate Street and the Gloucester meeting point, where there are a few benches on the pedestrianised street....

Walk this routeNote that the footpath across the railway by Gloucester station is currently closed, so it is necessary to cross the railway on London Road. The route uses an underpass that is currently closed to cross the railway, so we diverted left to cross on London Road, then returned to the route on Great Western Road....

We then cross fields, a few more stiles and follow an obvious path back to Stroud Road. We follow Stroud Road, which has a good pavement on the west side, over the M4, then take the signposted path right through the churchyard. Once again there is little waymarking, but a series of stiles takes you across horse paddocks onto more open fields, where the path onwards to Colethrop Lane has no difficulties other than more slightly constricted stiles. A little path takes us over the railway to Haresfield Lane, which we follow south to find a lane crossing the railway on a bridge. We follow the lane right past a farmhouse to more fields, with more overgrown stiles, then take the lane right past Arlebrook to emerge at a T junction. I suspect that this path once passed straight through the farmyards ahead, and its line is now a little strange - having crossed a bridge into a large pasture, we cross right to the far side of a hedge and follow another field to the edge of the farm, where a little bridge should take us back into the field we just left....

Walk this routeThe main problem for me is that the GPX plotting is too loose for navigation purposes, and I found a couple of places where short sections of path were obstructed to the point of inaccessibility, so I will submit what I was actually able to walk as STOGLO 2, and attach a more detailed review and pictures there....

On the outskirts of Ashleworth, there is a Tithe Barn, which was a spot of magic on the route. Beyond Ashleworth, the route leaves the Three Choirs Way, which the route sporadically follows. In terms of ease of following the route, despite the obvious choices, there are a multitude of footpaths and as a consequence, points where you have to make sure you've actually followed the plotted route....

Walk this routeI tried to walk this route with David and agree with his review. If a team cleared the vegetation from under the railway bridge at Pool Meadow, it may become a good and walkable route. If this happens, do let me know by commenting on this review and I'll change my review!...

The stretch along Oxstalls and Innsworth Lane isn't like all that pleasant, as it's a bit busier of a road, but it's direct, accessible, and safe. Overall, it's a perfectly good route, and one I'm happy to have included in the network....
