Help connect Bishop's Cleeve

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Bishop's Cleeve’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

I undertook this walk travelling eastwards from Bishops Cleeve, and found it to be a thoroughly rewarding route. Once beyond the houses, the route quickly adopts a distinctly rural atmosphere, which it maintains all the way to Winchcombe. Wherever possible, the route avoids roads, favouring footpaths and alleyways (see photo 2) as it threads through Bishops Cleeve and Woodmancote. From there, the final ascent leads to the summit of Cleeve Hill. At Corndean Lane, the route leaves the Isbourne Way, climbing briefly to rejoin the Cotswold Way, before descending into town via Vineyard Street....

I tackled this route today, starting from Cheltenham, and I have to say - much of what’s already been shared still holds true....

Also the eastern section which follows Langley Road was much busier than I expected for a minor road - lots of local traffic (I think there was an obstruction on the main road, so locals who knew the route were taking the diversion, so this problem might not be repeated)....

There are numerous side streets to take you out of Cheltenham along pleasant routes including Pittville Park (recommended)....

Beside Cheltenham Race Course the route is off road, then passes round the edge of an area which is used as a car park during races, and passing the race course railway station. I walked from Bishops Cleeve to Cheltenham and missed the route twice, the first time I missed an almost hidden path sign when crossing Southam Lane....

Mainly rural with some reasonably quiet urban at beginning and end. There are stiles which are ok for the human walkers but bigger dogs had to be hauled over....

Some of my group had dogs and a few of the stiles were tricky to negotiate with a big dog....

Can't quite give it a full five stars as last couple of miles into Winchcombe is on a road (OK, a country road with grass in the centre!) and Winchcombe itself is scarred by lanes of parked cars (imagine what it would look like car-free--see accompanying pics)....

Walk this route

This is an outline review of the first part of the route (about 4km from Bishops Cleeve to Gotherington). There is a small but significant error in the mapping shown on Slow Ways in the early part of this route: the map appears to show a right turn from Sandown Road into Nottingham Road and then a right turn to a path across to Sunrise Avenue. Nottingham Road is a dead end and there is no route out to Sunrise Avenue. The correct route is an earlier right turn from Sandown Road into Berwick Road and there is then a footpath through to Sunrise Road....
