Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Upton upon Severn’s Slow Ways.

Wasn't that muddy after recent daily showers. Easy to follow and lovely scenery. This was my first Slow Ways walk, thanks so much....

The lane walking is fine, is was walking at around midday on a Saturday and barely encountered any vehicles, there were no sections with walled sides or blind bends. I didn't amend the route to reflect this as you can see the route by the gates ahead of you....

Walk this routeIt didn't start well for me, the first section diverts away from what looks like it would be a really gorgeous section of the Severn Way to follow a route which was poorly plotted, not that easy to follow and gained little in terms of direction and nothing in terms of enjoyment. My only other gripes with the route were the seemingly pointless loop away from the road at Severn Stoke and the extra loop in Worcester to follow the Severn Way....

Just beyond the left turn where we cross a stream and enter Gloucestershire, we turn right along a bridleway that goes through fields by the old railway, then goes further right across more open fields to a farm where the bridleway turns left and our path continues straight on on an enclosed lane and then through woods. Eventually we reach a surfaced road, where we go right a short distance to join the river path on the left, which we follow to Mythe Bridge. We are forced to head back north by the river Avon, which we cross on the main road bridge, then head down steps onto the island and past the Avon lock to a footbridge, which we cross then go right a short distance before turning left up Smith's Lane and up an alley to High Street, where we turn right to reach the meeting point by the museum just beyond the junction (those with time to spare should continue down Church Street to see the Abbey)....

Walk this routeThe riverside path is surfaced here, and leads over two dock entrances to Navigation Road, then straight on past Diglis Bridge on another surfaced path. From here the route finding is easy - the clear path leads around a bend in the river into a caravan park, where we go straight on through the A4440 bridge (at this point I was looking for a path up the bank - the path along the top is visible but there is no way up to it before the yacht club access road which is signed Private). We continue on the riverside path around another big bend in the river, beyond which the path gets a little rough and narrow as it passes below the fields. We follow the riverside path along the embankment then turn left up Ham Lane into Severn Stoke....

Walk this routeI will give it a qualified thumbs up, as most of it is enjoyable, but the section through the quarry workings needs updating to reflect the diversion route and there are a couple of other places where the plotting is a bit too loose, so I have submitted UPTTEW 3, which unlike UPTTEW 2 retains the original route under Mythe Bridge and past the water works on the Severn Way. For a more detailed review with pictures see UPTTEW 3....

I tried to walk it from Worcester to Upton, but I couldn't find a way up from the riverside path to the one on the top of the bank south of the Worcester bypass bridge, other than the yacht club road which has a private sign so I stayed on the river path to Kempsey, and I have submit that as WORUPT 2. I also fell foul of a path closure south of Diglis for resurfacing work, which meant a detour via Waverley Street, but that should be very short term. For a more detailed review with pictures see WORUPT 2....

Walk this routebut my hunch is that Chris knew what he was doing and Malput Two may actually be the stronger route....

On the day I walked it I couldn't obviously see access under (or down from) Mythe Bridge (A438), so I decided to make use of the footpath to the east of Mythe Road (A38) instead....

I really enjoyed walking alongside the river, the quarry works were interesting and the lanes were a pleasure for me as it was raining when I walked the route....
danravenellison
The path out of Kempsey is a bit muddy and overgrown and there is a diversion while they are working on the bridge and roundabout on Worcester's southern relief road....

Very enjoyable walk, beautiful views of the Severn and Malvern hills. Even the bit that goes through a working quarry was a little bit exciting. Plenty of lovely pubs at either end, there is one at Ripple (The Railway) but wasn't open when I went....

Great walk, wide footpaths, section between Shuthonger and Tewkesbury is very pretty....

Walk this routeCross the road to enter priory park through a gate directly opposite. Turn immediately to your left to pick a 10m wide passage way that runs downhill via some widely spaced steps. At the end, go right onto Priory Road, a quiet pleasant street comprising a series of elegant Victorian houses. From priory road, take the first left onto Woodshears Road and descend, going past Malvern College sports complex on your right. Note: From here you can connect to Great Malvern Railway station by continuing under the bridge, turning left at the T-junction at the end of Woodshears Road and following the signs to the station. As the common land continues to broaden out take the route to the left which crosses under the rail line and then turn immediately to the right and continue until you reach the intersection of St Andrews and Peachfield Roads. Here, we suggest crossing to the far side of Peachfield Road and turning left descending common land with fields and the some rather grand houses to your immediate right. Turn left along this road and then after about 50m take the signposted bridle way to the right along Hawthorn Road. After a couple of hundred metres there is a style to the right which you take and then the path turns immediately to the left keeping up its easterly direction. Cross the main road and turn left, walking on the well-maintained footpath at the side of the road. Just before the third, turn sharp left and follow the right-hand edge of the field keeping the boundary to you immediate right. Go over a style in the corner of the field and bear slightly right towards a further gate, but one you can walk round the side of. When you come to a gate, turn right to go over a style and short narrow (three plank) bridge. Turn right at the style onto a footpath which soon becomes a well-defined track taking you down to a quiet country road. Turn left along the road for about 500 m to a point where the road does a clear, sharp right-angle bend to the left. In fact, walking along the track way next to the field down to the first boundary hedge and turning left, taking a well warn path with the hedge to your immediate right might avoid muddy boots. Continue with the hedge to your left past a farmhouse (Lodge Farm) and go through two swing gates (one is broken and you can walk round it), and on across an obvious path across a ploughed field Go through the gate to join a track that takes you over a stream and on to a style on the other side, positioned to the left Turn left go over the style, taking past a house immediately to your right and on to the road using the footpath which is also the driveway to the house At the road, turn right and then almost immediately left Here, you will see, on the left, a signpost pointing to a bridle path on the right Where the bridle path leaves the road, slightly concealed, there is an entrance to a footpath that follows the road to the left (Fig 18) Eventually, you will come to a gate on the left, a style on the left and a style in front of you All of this will give access to the road the path has been following and turning right will quickly take into the centre of Upton (Fig 19) The waterfront of Upton is reached by turning left at the end of the road...
