Description

Route follows Geopark Way from Ledbury. Varied paths, some woodland, some open field. Lots of climbing until getting to the Obelisk in Eastnor Deer Park. Leaves the Geopark Way to take footpaths through old quarry on the Herefordshire - Worcestershire Border. From there, the route is a combination of lanes and farmland. Lanes are quiet and with good sightlines as well plenty of opportunity to step over. Final section into Upton upon Severn follows the pavement of the A38 into the town. Steps, stiles and kissing gates throughout. From Ledbury, cafe at Deer Park (2.82km), kiosk at The Gullet (6.56km) and pub on the B4208 as you cross it (8.91km - almost exactly half way). Pubs and cafes at either end. Railway station and buses in Ledbury, buses from Upton upon Severn. Not many links to public transport en route

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A route that would have got 5 stars had the high standards of the Herefordshire end been maintained in Worcestershire. There was a lot of climbing to start but the paths were well marked and well maintained. One of the first things that struck me, once I'd got in to the countryside, was that I could barely hear a rumble of traffic, allowing me to bathe in the birdsong. Once beyond Eastnor Park, the terrain flattens out and there is some lane walking to be done, but the roads are open and verges very wide. Having passed the Robin Hood pub, which is about halfway, the route became less enjoyable. The walk as far as the edge of Upton-upon-Severn consists of farmland and lanes. The lane walking is fine, is was walking at around midday on a Saturday and barely encountered any vehicles, there were no sections with walled sides or blind bends. Crossing the fields though was a slog. The fields themselves were waterlogged, and the gates and stiles were in terrible repair. There was a section at Cowhills Farm (not one of the guilty farms) where the footpath has been diverted to link in with another one. I didn't amend the route to reflect this as you can see the route by the gates ahead of you. Reaching the pavement into Upton was a relief and the town appears to be a great place to finish with an impressive array of restaurants, pubs and cafes.
