Help connect Innsworth

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Innsworth’s Slow Ways.

I found the inaccuracy of the plotting of this route irritating, but I didn’t really have difficulty following its intention, so I won’t flag the route as a fail. I’m tempted to give 4*, but cows, bad plotting, and a short bit of grotty railside footpath reduce it to 3* for me, despite a lovely approach into Cheltenham....

I found the centre of Gloucester to be a little disappointing, as the route passed some once splendid, but now run down, buildings; and some groups of people who seemed to be recovering from a heavy Saturday night; and an awful lot of building work going on. There was quite clever use of off-road footpaths, with several cycle barriers, for the first 40% of the route, but then 20% of the route followed a fairly main suburban road through Longlevens that was a bit boring....

Beyond a farm lane the path is less distinct but the route right of the farm is partly waymarked. Beyond the bridge there is little sign of anyone trying to take the right of way lines literally, so just follow the track out to Badgeworth Road. At Hatherley Lane the GPX misses another subtlety, as the path heads left just before the lane and we have to follow the lane right a little to pick up the continuation....

Note that the footpath across the railway by Gloucester station is currently closed, so it is necessary to cross the railway on London Road. The route uses an underpass that is currently closed to cross the railway, so we diverted left to cross on London Road, then returned to the route on Great Western Road....

The footpath is overgrown and walkers will need to follow the edge of the field to pick the path up later shortly before the M5 underpass....

The stretch along Oxstalls and Innsworth Lane isn't like all that pleasant, as it's a bit busier of a road, but it's direct, accessible, and safe. Overall, it's a perfectly good route, and one I'm happy to have included in the network....

The route as plotted has you walking straight behind the buildings that line The Reddings, but that's not a footpath; just follow The Reddings. The stretch of the route into Cheltenham was good, it just felt very long!...
