Help connect Sherborne

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Sherborne’s Slow Ways.

Most of the walk is along the Macmillan Way, but unfortunately it's not a well maintained trail, so expect overgrown stretches, especially around the stiles. The path went through the middle of the field, but fortunately the cows were placid, despite my dog barking at them. So, the first third of the walk is across farmland, mostly pasture. After the wood, is the final third of the walk, and it's over arable farmland and then lanes and roads into Sherborne. This is a very rural walk, not well maintained but passable....

The walk from Sherborne to Bradford Abbas is along well used footpaths, and is really simple to follow. From here the walk into Yeovil is really pretty, along some interesting lanes (remember to pop off the lane and have a look at Jack the Treacle Eater, the fantastic folly on the Barwick estate. It's bonkers.) The walk through the woods is especially nice, though I suspect it might be a bit slippery in the winter - and you wouldn't want to slide down the steep slope into the road below....

Walk this route

Winding through fields, taking a path less travelled, and heading along straighter roads, the section closer to Sherborne is a joy - the rest is fairly tortuous and probably only passible with dry weather / firm ground. Access was also a challenge with locked gates and stiles completely overgrown,...

At the Yeovil end this route has a stretch of road walking along Newton Road that I hated. There is no path or verge and the visibility for the drivers is not good. There is a much safer and pleasant way and you can find it in YeoShe2...
