20 Jun 2024I liked this route.
I agree with the earlier comments. Would be good if someone looked after the path a bit better in places, but I enjoyed it.

20 Jun 2024I agree with everything Helen's said!
This is a good and enjoyable route that is in need of some love. If you walk it, please take a stick and some secateurs to take down the nettles!
I'd 100% walk this route again (despite the nettles, gates and puddles). It was great walking it in combination with the route between Yetminster and Crewkerne.

27 Aug 2023I walked from Yetminster to Sherborne and overall enjoyed the walk. Most of the walk is along the Macmillan Way, but unfortunately it's not a well maintained trail, so expect overgrown stretches, especially around the stiles. Many of them are through hedgerow and the hedgerow is reclaiming the gaps. Some of them will be difficult for tall people, who will have to duck as they climb the stiles.
The route leaves Yetminster through a dairy farm. Walking through dairy farms is not one of my favourite passtimes. Most of the fields were free of cows, but they were full of cow pats, and were really muddy at the field exits. I eventually came to a field occupied by a huge herd. The path went through the middle of the field, but fortunately the cows were placid, despite my dog barking at them. It was only after I got in to the field that I realised there was a bull in there as well. Argh! Our eyes locked, he stepped towards us, I quickly decided to go round the edge of the field and veered away, trying to persuade my dog to shut up. The bull stayed where he was. Phew! I think he realised chasing us was a waste of energy. It was a big herd, I'm sure he couldn't afford to waste any energy!
So, the first third of the walk is across farmland, mostly pasture. The second third is along quiet lanes, and then footpaths through Honeycombe Wood. The wood looks like it gets very muddy in the wet. Some of the paths are hard to spot, so keep your eyes open. It's also full of pheasant, surely the daftest of birds? I'm not sure what happens when the shoot is on, but presumably the footpaths are always open.
After the wood, is the final third of the walk, and it's over arable farmland and then lanes and roads into Sherborne. The roads have paths so it's all safe, and I seemed to get into the centre of town very quickly.
This is a very rural walk, not well maintained but passable. At times there are fine views over the surrounding countryside, and apart from the beginning and end very quiet.
