Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Rotherham’s Slow Ways.

It’s a very walk through the industrial areas of Sheffield’s north, following the canal out to Meadowhall & then on to Rotherham. The first part from Sheffield wasn’t always pleasant & we encountered a section of the canal path which was closed. Overall, it was disappointing to see a section of the canal path was closed & the detour through the industrial areas none too pleasant....

Beyond the railway bridge we leave the canal briefly along a wide but little used road, then rejoin the old towpath that passes through a pleasant green corridor between industrial sites. We cross to the north bank on a bridge that still has old tram tracks, and shortly afterwards leave the canal right on an unsignposted path that has a short unsurfaced section (fairly compacted so not too muddy) then crosses the railway....

A good route, though Mousehole Lane is unsurfaced, muddy and steep in places. The walk round the reservoir is well surfaced popular and scenic, and I agree that it is the best thing on this route. We leave the crowds to go straight on on another surfaced path into Thrybergh, where the street route has a shop - there is also a slightly shorter footpath option here. The lane is unsurfaced and quite muddy, and evidently very popular with motorbikes (fortunately I didn't meet any)....

I walked from Rotherham in two stages breaking the journey at Meadowhall South tram stop. Leaving Rotherham the route passes the train and tram station before taking to the canal towpath....

Back down alongside the river the path is mostly good including an excellent section of concrete boardwalk. More shops here as we climb again as the river takes a course around the hill to the east. The Trans Pennine Trail alongside the river looks good on the map but I didn’t find it a welcoming route alongside a high security factory fence. The river here had much evidence of recent flooding but the path is mostly above the high water line....

There is a longish walk through residential areas before you get to open country, after which wellies are good if there’s been a lot of rain. There’s a dodgy road crossing at the top of this slope, after which there’s a short walk through some residential roads, including a well-hidden footpath between the backs of houses....

It goes alongside rivers and canals for most of the route, and has the super-convenient stopping point of Meadowhall shopping centre half way along....

This was the highlight of the walk, with a good path all round it, plentiful wildfowl, and a café at the end. This was followed by the lowlight of the walk – nearly a mile of walking along the narrow pavement of a busy road, where conversation was very difficult due to traffic noise and having to walk single file....

Walk this routeThe route safely crosses a main road by an under bridge to arrive at a newish industrial park. There is a choice the signed alternative has views over the site along a good surface or the main route passes through the site. Charot uses a footpath that does not exist on the ground or definitive map so from here we need to stay on Meadow Bank Road or along Meadow Bank Road by the houses which is a short respite from the noise but involves a little more elevation. Once on the main road there is a narrow grass buffer between road and pavement....

The path marked on OS alongside the M1 south of jct 34 is not available and is not on the definitive maps of Sheffield or Rotherham....

Two significant highlights on this walk, a peep into Elsecar museum site and a view of the stunning Wentworth Hall and it's delightful associated village, so perhaps three. Services at Elsecar plus just off route at Wentworth at Greasborough. The final hedged path is far better close to this impressive estate village. The road is rather busy but there is a pavement and the village offers a shop, inn, post office and buses so why not include it on the walk? Our route crosses a field so there may be cattle before re-joining an estate road along which I met families having a great day out and only occasional estate traffic....

Started in Rotherham to head back to Sheffield from Rotherham Station, and we were aware that some of the route was shut, but expected clear signage to get back onto the canal route via main roads. Until everything reopens again, this is not a route for a casual expected route as there is not enough guidance to let you know where you need to go....

But closed sections, with no explanation in some cases where the path was open again made for a frustrating walk, Once open again this would be a really nice route....

Mary Oz added Sherot three, a new walk from Sheffield to Rotherham
Walk this routeI actually walked Sherot 2 which is identical to Sherot 1 from the Tinsley M1 Roundabout to Rotherham. Sections of the towpath here are currently closed or due to be closed until 31/3/2023. There are advised diversions in place, but this means that this exact Slow Way is not entirely possible for a time....

It follows the River Don as far as possible, but includes some road pavements, and also part of the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal towpath. After crossing the tramline and passing under the M1, the route follows the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal, past several locks....

It was quite isolated in places and muddy but don't believe any alternative route wouldn't be....

Sheaf Porter Rivers Trust added Sherot two, a new walk from Sheffield to Rotherham
Walk this routeOverall it's a great route along the canal (without any roads), but it would be much better if it started at the Sheffield canal basin - there's no need for the start bit past Hyde Park tram stop and down an almost-deserted Lumley Street. I also can't see the reason for the bit where it leaves the canal and joins the road for a while near IKEA. You can just continue along the canal no problem....

The footpath for the Sheffield half is a little uneven and muddy, flat after Rotherham. A great mix of nature, old and new industrial architecture. All off road from Sheffield canal basin to Rotherham Station....

Major alteration to suggested route is to include the Sheffield canal basin to see the famous straddle warehouse building....

A great walk from Sheffield to Rotherham. Some quirky street art at the Sheffield end of the route....
