From the meeting place at Rawmarsh we head south to meet the busy main road, best to cross here at the lights. The route continues into School Lane alongside a large recycling centre before meeting a main road at the Fitzwilliam Arms Hotel, an expansion of the public house that originally stood on the south side of the road. From here it’s a path with the water on our left to pass under a road bridge. Cross the canal and take Greasbrough Road which continues as a path to pelican lights another path links to further severed section of Greasbrough Road....

Duck and dive under the rail line then care to take the riverside footpath, not the surfaced ramped path to platform 1. Pavements along minor roads avoid services on the main road but there are earlier links if required. A playpark takes us to the main road close by a bridge over what was the Dearne and Dove canal. We pass under the rail line and close to Swinton station although our sighting is just the old entrance building now a marine engineer’s yard, all very interesting for a canal and rail enthusiast....

The route continues into School Lane alongside a large recycling centre before meeting a main road at the Fitzwilliam Arms Hotel, an expansion of the public house that originally stood on the south side of the road. After rounding the last building in the road we walk alongside water and here old maps show a branch from the main canal which served coke ovens plus steel works. Our path leads to the busy A633 Rotherham Road which needs a right turn to cross at the lights....

This walk avoids the golf course and reduces road walking, passing through Wath Wood and Rosehill Park both well used and pleasant green areas. As the lane turns we continue along a well walked path between open wire fences with fields to either side. Meeting the road, which was closed on the day I walked, we could have used the other section of Abdy Lane then the pavement of this road which would avoid the less used field path. Onward this route takes an alternative route crossing the main road at lights to Dale Road which offers a direct pavement walk to the meeting point by a Tesco Express and other services....

Walk this route3) The official path through the golf course is not well marked and may cause dispute. Alternatively, when the 'official' path runs out, turn right up the golf course path towards the clubhouse/farm buildings until you get to the tarmac and then turn left down a well worn track...
