Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

14 Nov 2022It's a reasonable route starting on urban footpaths before going on to tracks and grass, including a golf course, before going through woods and an urban park before getting back to pavements again. I've run the off road sections frequently and they can get very muddy underfoot as well as having a number of sets of steps (see photo 2) and styles so absolutely not suitable for wheels of any kind. That said, the off road parts are pleasant to travel in terms of the view.
There are a few roads to cross but they are generally quiet or have pedestrian crossings you can use.
Specific problems with the route are:
1) Early on the path suggests walking through a graveyard which isn't actually possible as drawn. You need to turn up a path before the graveyard or, as I did, turn afterwards. This allows you to then take steps and a footpath down the side of the graveyard or go up a parallel 'public' steps and footpath.
2) The first turn off road is through a gap in a hedge which I have always found to be overgrown... see photo 1... so walk past that a short way and use one of the other informal paths in that area to get back on the route.
3) The official path through the golf course is not well marked and may cause dispute. According to the OS map there is a right of way but it is not marked fully on the course itself... it sort of runs out at one of the course pathways. To follow the OS route will require walking across fairways with no obvious path on them and possibly lead to some awkward conversations or encounters. Alternatively, when the 'official' path runs out, turn right up the golf course path towards the clubhouse/farm buildings until you get to the tarmac and then turn left down a well worn track. This isn't any further (two sides of a square) and will bring you back on to the route... without the risk of a dispute or an accidental encounter with a golf ball!.
