As the road crosses over the trail there is no link so we must continue, cross the road and take Park Hill Road then right again into an isolated part of Station Road which provides our link. This route now resolves issues of the first two and we leave the trail at the level road crossing of the B6273 Pontefract Road and take the pavement to an unsigned track with a cycle barrier....

Ken added Womwat three, a new walk from Wombwell to Wath upon Dearne
Walk this routeThis walk avoids the golf course and reduces road walking, passing through Wath Wood and Rosehill Park both well used and pleasant green areas. As the lane turns we continue along a well walked path between open wire fences with fields to either side. Meeting the road, which was closed on the day I walked, we could have used the other section of Abdy Lane then the pavement of this road which would avoid the less used field path. Onward this route takes an alternative route crossing the main road at lights to Dale Road which offers a direct pavement walk to the meeting point by a Tesco Express and other services....

Walk this routeLeaving the excellent services of the Wombwell meeting place we take Station Road which now fails to lead to the suggested location. As the road crosses over the trail there is no link so we must continue, cross the road and take Park Hill Road then right again into an isolated part of Station Road which provides our link. Leaving the trail I took Dearne Way and at the end followed a dash line, shown on OS, which offered a walked path to meet the definitive path....

Walk this routeThere is also no path from the TPT after crossing Knoll Beck to Pontefract Road....

The route was fairly easy, a mixture of footpath, field and gravel. Had to take a detour as you arrive at a field as a herd of cows were in the way path. Opted to walk round the field to not disturb, other than that the route is pretty clear and easy to follow....
Philip Foster-Dennison
Philip Foster-Dennison pledged to walk Watbol two
Walk this routeAt the junction we cross and take the signposted path, which skirts the edge of an arable field (the surface water here was just about avoidable) then continues through a scrubby open area alongside the fences of the industrial buildings to emerge on Golden Smithies Lane, where we go left as far as the next roundabout then go right on the road to Dearne Valley College....

Beyond Wath Road a lane leads us to the canal basin, where we join a branch of the TransPennine Trail, which is a well surfaced path that follows the line of the old canal. Beyond Smithy Bridge Lane we leave the canal and follow the main path half right, still on the TransPennine Trail. The path leads into a more open area, where we bear right and cross a bridge and go up more steps to reach West Street, where we turn left to find the meeting point by the bus stops to the right....

This route starts well with a stone bridge offering evidence of the infilled canal and a good stone surfaced path. I would hope there is a better well used alternative link to the Trans Pennine Trail from Wath because once on that trail it was very easy going on a green and occasionally blue traffic free path. In places it was noisy from a busy road and there was one busy crossing at Cortonwood access road but otherwise a most enjoyable walk. The Elsecar Greenway departs from the Dove Valley Trail and the start of this is alongside that busy and noisy road on a disused railway line which was used elsewhere as a heritage line from Elsecar....

The route soon takes a gentle climb to Roman Terrace then turns left to cross the railway onto an excellent and lit cycle route which leads to college. So excellent route from Mexborough to the college but as plotted loses stars onward to Wath....

Grace Wilson added Watraw three, a new walk from Wath upon Dearne to Rawmarsh
Walk this route3) The official path through the golf course is not well marked and may cause dispute. Alternatively, when the 'official' path runs out, turn right up the golf course path towards the clubhouse/farm buildings until you get to the tarmac and then turn left down a well worn track...
