Help connect Hoyland

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Hoyland’s Slow Ways.

A bit tricky to find the underpass under the M1 - you have to go straight on to a signposted mud path when the gravelled path goes to the right....

Beyond Wath Road a lane leads us to the canal basin, where we join a branch of the TransPennine Trail, which is a well surfaced path that follows the line of the old canal. Beyond Smithy Bridge Lane we leave the canal and follow the main path half right, still on the TransPennine Trail. The path leads into a more open area, where we bear right and cross a bridge and go up more steps to reach West Street, where we turn left to find the meeting point by the bus stops to the right....

Nice footpath heavy route out of town, up the hill to the A6195 just before Blacker Hill. There is scope for an alternative route which bypasses the awkward and -to me- slightly off putting ‘saw mill and machinery’ area; for example at the A6195 crossing, instead of turning right and walking up Blacker Hill, turn left and take the path alongside High Royd farm, and then continue past Barrow Farm (this was recommended by a local man out walking his terrier); or from the same path, turn right onto the disused railway track between High Royd and Blacker Hill - this option would make a stile free (and cow free) route...

This route starts well with a stone bridge offering evidence of the infilled canal and a good stone surfaced path. I would hope there is a better well used alternative link to the Trans Pennine Trail from Wath because once on that trail it was very easy going on a green and occasionally blue traffic free path. In places it was noisy from a busy road and there was one busy crossing at Cortonwood access road but otherwise a most enjoyable walk. The Elsecar Greenway departs from the Dove Valley Trail and the start of this is alongside that busy and noisy road on a disused railway line which was used elsewhere as a heritage line from Elsecar....

Two significant highlights on this walk, a peep into Elsecar museum site and a view of the stunning Wentworth Hall and it's delightful associated village, so perhaps three. Services at Elsecar plus just off route at Wentworth at Greasborough. The final hedged path is far better close to this impressive estate village. The road is rather busy but there is a pavement and the village offers a shop, inn, post office and buses so why not include it on the walk? Our route crosses a field so there may be cattle before re-joining an estate road along which I met families having a great day out and only occasional estate traffic....

Walk this route

Note that I have not walked all of this route - I created it after failing to follow WORHOY 1 from Hoyland to Worsbrough, and I wrote a more detailed review of that one with a few pictures. I am fairly confident that this route is easier to follow, but can't vouch for the quality of the paths on the section I didn't do....

After the motorway, we follow a lane but soon leave it on a little used path going right. At Stead Lane the continuation path is further right than the map suggests, and there is one shortcut path that is barely worth bothering with....

From the river Dove onwards the rest of the road up the hill into Worsbrough is easy, though the right of way left of the road is nearer than the OS map suggests (i.e. you use the "path" not the green right of way on the OS Explorer map)....

This could be a good Slow Way, but the route follows public rights of way that are overgrown and not accessible....

Really lovely walk and most of it is on footpaths away from roads which is great. I took my Dad and he enjoyed taking photos of the flowers and the trees....
