Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

03 Jul 2024This route starts at Sheffield train station & winds through the city centre to the canal. It’s a very walk through the industrial areas of Sheffield’s north, following the canal out to Meadowhall & then on to Rotherham.
Meadowhall really does split the walk into two very different sections. The first part from Sheffield wasn’t always pleasant & we encountered a section of the canal path which was closed. This meant a detour off path through streets lined with lorries & factories. Often pavements were blocked with cars meaning road walking was the only option. Some elements alongside the canal were pretty but the traffic noise & busy roads were never far away. We did meet some volunteers maintaining the path along the canal, which was nice to see.
The trail after Meadowhall to Rotherham was much more pleasant. It was mostly on the towpath with nice views of the river, locks & wildflowers. There were a few sections of overgrown bushes & hedges making the path a bit narrow, but this section was certainly more accessible than earlier ones. Overall, it was disappointing to see a section of the canal path was closed & the detour through the industrial areas none too pleasant. Many dead rats were sighted. Pleased we did it as a challenge, however not a walk I’ll do again quickly. Wouldn’t recommend taking children on this route due to lots of road walking through busy streets & industrial areas.

25 Feb 2024 (edited 21 Aug 2024)I’d love to give this route five stars, as it has such potential. It goes alongside rivers and canals for most of the route, and has the super-convenient stopping point of Meadowhall shopping centre half way along. Here are loos and plenty of places to have lunch. Just past Meadowhall, going towards Rotherham, you pass through a bewildering set of criss-crossing modes of transport - canal, river, rail, tram, and of course road, including the double-decker Tinsley flyovers. There’s also a lot for those interested in industrial architecture.
Sadly, much of the route is closed because maintenance has been neglected in favour of caring for children and the elderly (political point there…). At one point, the route was forced through a works yard, now closed and up for sale, so you have to take a long and tedious walk along the A6178 and Princess Street/A6109, which is as pleasant as it sounds. Also, some bits of the Five Weirs Walk have collapsed because of flooding, and the second half of the route along the canal (towards Rotherham) needs to be checked, as there have been closures there too.
To repeat a point, this would be a five star route if it could be fixed - I would love to do this walk again, properly!.

30 May 2022I agree with the previous review on this route. It would be a great walk along the river valley. But closed sections, with no explanation in some cases where the path was open again made for a frustrating walk, Once open again this would be a really nice route. I found the way transferring between Sheror1 and sherot2, which also had a closed towpath. Marys description of Sherot 3 looks an ideal solution whilst these closures are in place.

04 Apr 2022This walk (part of the Trans Pennine Trail) has potential, and was probably good when it was first created, but when we walked it, from Sheffield to Rotherham, two sections were closed and another section was due to be closed in a couple of weeks.
1. OS Grid Ref: SK 37223 88371: A section of the riverside footpath was undermined by floods in November 2019 and collapsed. There appear to be no agreed plans for repairs and reopening at the moment, so this could take a while. In addition to this, the alternative road route marked on the OS Map goes through an industrial estate which has locked gates outside office hours. We couldn’t access it on a Saturday.
2. It appears that from OS Grid Ref: SK 41181 92235 to OS Grid Ref: SK 42630 92702 will be closed from 18/4/2022 until 31/3/2023. It was still open when we walked it though.
3. From OS Grid Ref: SK 42630 92702 to the Rotherham Station is closed until 30/7/2022 due to flood defence works.
I have created SheRot Three from the route that we were able to walk on 2/4/2022.
