Help connect Thurcroft

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Thurcroft’s Slow Ways.

Dropping down Carr Lane I spot a well walked path emerging through the woodland on my right which would avoid road walking, but as traffic is light it’s no big deal. The walked path was then fairly on plot, it’s easy to follow the line of overhead wires and initially a low black fence, animal mitigation measure I believe, plus on our left the site fence. The lane is easy to follow, passing the road and entrance gates to the landfill site....

New Orchard Lane is initially a road with a large green space on the right then on the left the failed Ultimate Battery Company (UBC) a £28m project to create green battery tech and jobs, but sadly, public funds were lost when the company failed in 2025. The lane becomes more lane like and we pass the site of Thurcroft Main Colliery (1913 -1991). Once found we are soon in open space and it’s easy to follow the line of overhead wires, and to our right the site fence....

New Orchard Lane is initially a road with a large green space on the right then sadly on the left the failed Ultimate Battery Company (UBC) a £28m project to create green battery tech and jobs, public funds were lost when the company failed in 2025. The lane crosses the road to the landfill site, where the said map is located. The end of Joan Lane becomes a surfaced footpath dropping to a bridged stream crossing then passing through the churchyard....

Herringthorpe Valley Park again offers firm surfaced paths and play equipment so well worth a visit. Wickersley Wood offers many paths which are far more enjoyable than the recorded path that clings to the back of houses. The public path crossing the field from First to Second Lane is amazing, the equivalent of a footpath motorway. After crossing Kingsforth Lane the public path is in the field, obvious from this direction, travelling west the landfill site road may look more inviting, but should not be used....

After following hedgelines for a while the route strikes out across the field to reach the motorway. After crossing through the hedge there is a line across the horse pasture to reach the minor road through Brampton en le Morthen. From here, there is a cross pasture path to reach the housing on the outskirts of Thurcroft....

We turn here onto estate roads which eventually lead to the line of a footpath cutting between the houses to access open fields with horses. Cropped fields follow and end with overgrown steps down to the road adjacent to the motorway bridge. No sign of ancient footpath for an off road route before houses filled the fields so no regrets for our loss....

Walk this route

Popular for dog walking around access from Loughton Common Road which might be an alternative Slow Way approach. It might be possible to continue to the next road and limit pavement walking but it’s okay along the plotted route taking us to shops at the meeting place in Thurcroft which has more evidence of an ex mining community....

On the left, after the crossing, a small street leads down to the church. Immediately after crossing the small stream a small path on the right leads into the wood and joins the right-of-way. Just before joining New Orchard Lane the slope steepens, and the path dives off left and right through the trees and meets the by-way....

Easy walk on roads or disused railway so flat and well surfaced. Route clearly signed through trading estate in Dinnington. Track section very pleasant with trees either side....
