Help connect Chapeltown

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Chapeltown’s Slow Ways.

A bit tricky to find the underpass under the M1 - you have to go straight on to a signposted mud path when the gravelled path goes to the right....

Beyond the railway bridge we leave the canal briefly along a wide but little used road, then rejoin the old towpath that passes through a pleasant green corridor between industrial sites. We cross to the north bank on a bridge that still has old tram tracks, and shortly afterwards leave the canal right on an unsignposted path that has a short unsurfaced section (fairly compacted so not too muddy) then crosses the railway....

The route safely crosses a main road by an under bridge to arrive at a newish industrial park. There is a choice the signed alternative has views over the site along a good surface or the main route passes through the site. Charot uses a footpath that does not exist on the ground or definitive map so from here we need to stay on Meadow Bank Road or along Meadow Bank Road by the houses which is a short respite from the noise but involves a little more elevation. Once on the main road there is a narrow grass buffer between road and pavement....

The path marked on OS alongside the M1 south of jct 34 is not available and is not on the definitive maps of Sheffield or Rotherham....

Some great countryside on this walk with urban at each end. Go prepared for some mud and you will have an enjoyable walk with some great views and plenty of easy walking. I walked from Stockbridge, a town that is yet to grab me but it does provide views demanding that I escape to climb the hills for a good walk. Frost on the grass and falling leaves confirmed a winter walk but the steady climb kept me warm. Whaarncliffe Heath marks the summit of our walk and the path along the perimeter offers good views northwards....

Beyond Plank Gate there is no shortcut path along the right of way line so it is easiest to stay on the main path then traverse left on another good path over the dam of a small reservoir to join the good track above (there are plenty of alternatives, but none of them stick to the right of way/GPX line). We cross Woodhead Road and go a short distance right before taking the signposted farm lane down to Smithy Fold, where we follow the track right below the farm then use the first of several stone step stiles to enter the fields beyond. We cross another stone stile to leave the field, then follow the very wet muddy path by the wall right up to a muddy pasture. Cross this main road with care and join the pavement right along the south side....

Crossing the road a cycle barrier offers an off road path before a pavement through an industrial area. The route drops down to the meeting point at the station which also has buses to Sheffield but no inviting seating....

The quality of the surface varied, some sections were tarmac or gravel, but other sections were very muddy....

We cross High Street and go straight on down Waingate to cross the river Sheaf, then turn right along the riverside path, which we follow under the A61, turning left just before the railway bridge, then right across Savile Street (using pelican crossings) and up Spital Hill. Beyond the houses we take the path up steps to the left, taking the left branch where it forks and following past the adventure playground to the cemetery wall, where we turn sharp left to find the main entrance to the cemetery. We take a surfaced path straight on down to Firshill Crescent, where we turn right, then left onto Firshill Rise. The path through the park is surfaced, and steepens as it approaches Elm Lane, with steps at the top, We go left and cross the junction onto Buchanan Road, taking the vehicle access road right into the park, where we continue down the surfaced path beyond the car park. Our path goes along the edge of several fields (some of which were very wet and muddy when I walked them) then steeply up the hill to meet the bridlepath along the top, where we go left a short distance then right down into a new housing estate, which unfortunately complicates navigation - we turn right at Chapel Road then left down the first road (Willow Crescent?) and taking another alleyway left, which crosses Willow Crescent again to pick up the old path to the right which leads easily down to Ecclesfield Road, where we go left under the first railway bridge, then take the second road leaving the roundabout to the Chapeltown meeting point at the railway station....

After the motorway, we follow a lane but soon leave it on a little used path going right. At Stead Lane the continuation path is further right than the map suggests, and there is one shortcut path that is barely worth bothering with....

Pleasant, calm and quiet route that takes you through some very different Sheffield suburbs, parks, woodland and fields. The route was safe and fit for purpose, but did include some pretty steep and uneven steps in Hartley Brook Dyke that some might find challenging....

Estate walking includes steps, kerbs and steep slopes; field walking is uneven rutted paths, narrow at times. The only main road walking is through Ecclesfield - but it has shops on it, and a chip shop with outside seating, so you probably won't mind! Some estate walking, so again lots of kerbs, steps and other obstacles....
