Help connect Thurgoland
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Thurgoland’s Slow Ways.

We cross a small slightly overgrown and muddy area with a couple of stiles then follow a field edge right and a path through the wood to reach Old Mill Lane, where we turn left down the hill. We follow the lane around the corner, and take the path right that descends steps into a field, crossing the Don on a sturdy footbridge. The path down the hill is quite good, but has a lot of steps and a few stiles....

Eventually we cross the Don on Romticle Viaduct, and within sight of the tunnel entrance we leave the track on a surfaced path that climbs to Old Mill Lane. We go straight on, taking the unsurfaced path steeply up through woodland, then taking the left fork which leaves the wood and follows the field edges....

The route starts from the Village Hall where an information boards shows the parish walks. We are soon out of the village but the path initially a track passes through a small independent settlement of Hall Fold, a mix of old and new. A concrete drive leads to Pule Hill Hall a busy farm through which our path passes, it was a bit muddy, but then there had been a lot of rain. This path is the only one on route that shows limited use. Meeting the road I recommend a walk through Locke Park, ignore the footpath to one side the small detour to the main path is worthwhile....

Approaching our leaving point we cross a tall viaduct where there is no vertical link to the footpath that passes underneath. While researching the viaduct name I discovered Barnsley Council sign-boards call this Romticle Viaduct, local newspapers call it Rumtickle Viaduct and the LNER plans from the 1940s call it Romptickle Viaduct, old OS maps show Rumtickle....

This route is basicly good but fails at the tunnel. The bridleway NW-SE passes through the tunnel, the footpath N-S passes over the top. There is no link between them at the position shown....

Mill Lane, another quiet road starts the next climb and we could continue along this to Thurgoland but our route is off road so at a crossing path we continue the climb to pass over the top of the hill on which stands Hurtwaite Hall under which passes through the Trans Pennine Trail using a disused railway tunnel. The path continues to climb away from the hall alongside a stone wall then a track across cropped fields to arrive alongside the school. Crossing the main road we enter a park with a bonded surface path which quickly takes us to the meeting place at the Horse and Jockey opposite the village hall....

We've heard that the route goes through Wentworth Castle Parkland which is now owned by National Trust. That part of the route is only accessible by paying and accessing through the carpark. Thubar two is an alternative that uses the Dove Valley Way instead and is a kilometre shorter....
