Help connect Princes Risborough

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Princes Risborough’s Slow Ways.

I walked this from Princess Risborough to High Wycombe on a warmish autumn morning, which was a little foggy (As the photos show). From Princess Risborough you quickly end up on lovely paths at field edges, with red kites circling above. Bradenham Wood was gorgeous again, although I did get a little bit lost as the paths were hard to see due to all the leaves!...

Navigation easy and most paths clear to follow but autumn leaves can make less obvious....

The climb up at Whiteleaf Hill was quite steep but thereafter a nice walk through lovely Chiltern woods. Great Hampden was very picturesque. The final trudge into Prestwood was along a road but it wasn't far and was unavoidable....

As the previous reviews have noted, the majority of this route is on the disused railway line now known as The Phoenix Trail, and it is consequently pretty straight and level for most of the way. We walked the route starting at Princes Risborough, and took a slight diversion off the route for lunch at the Three Horseshoes in Towersey, which I would recommend. Overall it was a very easy and enjoyable walk....

Walk this route

I walked this from Princess Risborough to Lane End on a moderately warm slightly sunny day, after not much precipitation in the last few weeks. It starts in the small town of Princess Risborough, and after a while walking through the down you'll end up walking through some rather overgrown part....

Walk this route

This walk has longer flatter segments, mixed in with shorter hilly sections (which make for spectacular views of the Chilterns). If you check on the map, you'll see that significant sections are on-road, but the majority of those are quiet, and the ones that are slightly busier (in the urban areas) almost always have pavements - the notable exception being that just south of the A40. Don't try it with wheels, though - stiles, kissing gates and some very narrow sections including the part that coincides with the Chiltern Way make that impractical....

Out of Wendover this is a minute re-routing necessary due to HS2 (instead of crossing the railway on a bridge), to right out of the station and then right again....

This makes the bulk of the route suitable for wheels, but the section from the centre of Princes Risborough to the NCR isn't - there's quite a variety of terrain, including flint chips beside the church, a bridleway through a field, and two flights of steps bounded by stiles....

We walked this route from Wendover to Princes Risborough on a beautiful clear, sunny, February afternoon. The route is easy to follow, and as others have noted there are plenty of climbs and muddy sections, but the views from the edge of the Chiltern escarpment make it well worthwhile....

I first walked this route in April 2021, describing it as “A very enjoyable walk through the Chilterns.” I walked it again today (29 August 2022) and have upgraded my rating from 4 to 5 stars, as it really is a very good walk....

Absolutely beautiful walk, a lot of which follows the Ridgeway National Walking Route, passing over Coombe Hill - Stunning views! Wonderful mix of woodland and open country walking. A few big climbs, but worth the views!...

Walk this route

A great route through beautiful scenery and passing by Bradenham Manor and Hughenden Manor (both of which were home to Benjamin Disraeli). The section from Princes Risborough to Bradenham Woods car park goes through rolling hills with sweeping views but does contain some stiles that might present an obstacle to the less mobile (there is a list of obstacles at the end of this review). While walking this section we also walked through a field that had cows in it (although we didn't bother them, and they didn't bother us)....
