Although it's longer, a better walking way is via Benson, Ewelme (path follows road) and onto the Ridgeway to Lys Farm. The best cycling route is via Benson, Ewelme, Brightwell Baldwin and Cuxham....

Watlington to Henley (Wathen 1) review. We walked from Henley to Watlington on a sunny October day in 2022. Martin has posted lovely photos, so I have just posted an Autumnal view, a twisty tree, a fungal specimen and a tree laden with tiny yellow apples....

Walk this routeUnfortunately, there is then a long section along Clack’s Lane (Photo 2), which lacks a verge in places. The Slow Way joins The Chiltern Way along a quieter lane. There’s a road walk along the Grove Lane B-road. There is then a pleasant walk south along Shakespeare’s Way (Photo 7)....

Walk this routeThere is a steep ascent to a tarmacked lane with a break point at The Five Horseshoes (Photo 4). There's a descent towards the B480, but the route turns back to ascend again, across fields to a tarmacked lane. The Slow Way takes a quiet lane into Middle Assendon, with a break point at The Rainbow Inn (Photo 8). The route heads east up a steep footpath (Photo 9), that turns south onto the Oxfordshire Way into Henley....

Walk this routeThe most challenging section was Clack's Lane, but it isn't easy to see how the route could be adapted to avoid it, without adding a significant southward loop....

After a section from Watlington to Pyrton, the route follows the Oxfordshire Way to Tetsworth, and then continues north into Thame....

Furthermore, the verges you'll have to take refuge on are high - up to 30cm high in places - and frequently sloping....

Walk this routeThere's a section of road at Pyrton, before entering the outskirts of Watlington. From Watlington to Chalgrove: you leave Pyrton on a bridleway just after the two stepped brick walls flanking a driveway, not the footpath just before those walls.....
