Help connect Prestwood

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Prestwood’s Slow Ways.

The first part of the route is on pavement next to a main road before turning off into a side street and then eventually picking up a footpath that leads across a field and down into the pretty Angling Spring Wood. At the end of Angling Spring Wood, the footpath leads across a field and after you walk through the gate, you walk a short distance before turning left onto a made track/road. You cross the bridge, follow the path until you reach the road which you cross and then pick up a footpath which takes you around the edge of the Misbourne School. You then reach Little Missenden and walk along the quiet road (no pavement) for a short distance until you pick up a footpath on your right. Once you cross the A413, you have to step over a metal barrier (waist height) and then go down some steep steps and carry along the footpath that runs parallel to the very pretty Amersham High Street. The footpath leads you to Whielden Street where you will turn left and walk up to the junction with the High Street, crossing the road and walking passed the picturesque St Marys church and the stunning Memorial Gardens....

Unfortunately the day we completed the walk it was very wet for some of the walk and the paths can get extremely muddy in places....

Has some lovely scenery, but the stretch along from little missenden past Shardeloes is a little spoiled by the noise from the main A road, but the lake wildlife does make up for it. Walk goes through farm fields with animals, crops, as well as some quiet country roads. Crossing the main A road is a bit hairy, but the only way to avoid this is a much extended route, which if like me you have to then walk back, makes for a very long day...

There were a couple of other paths which looked like they could get muddy but there were planks to help out if needed....

The climb up at Whiteleaf Hill was quite steep but thereafter a nice walk through lovely Chiltern woods. Great Hampden was very picturesque. The final trudge into Prestwood was along a road but it wasn't far and was unavoidable....

It's a lovely walk, but I docked one star due to the street walking in Prestwood, which was a little too long. I walked this on a semi-sunny Friday afternoon without any precipitation in the last week, from Prestwood to Amersham. Besides a few minor hills at the start, this walk was mostly down hill through woods with sometimes muddy paths, a little more street walking in Little Kingshill and then most of the last stretch was through farmland into Old Amersham....

The walk through Prestwood was a little disappointing, as it's just on the side of a road....

Navigation was easy, and refreshments en route are available at The Crown or Red Lion in Little Missenden, or nearer the end at The Full Moon in Little Kingshill. The paths are generally in good condition, though sections in Atkins' Wood (where it is a bridleway) frequently get very muddy. Overall, it was a very enjoyable walk....

We took this route from Prestwood to Wendover and thoroughly enjoyed the walk. Other than a short section on roads when leaving Prestwood, the walk was through woodlands and across fields, with good views of the Chiltern countryside. There was a short diversion from the indicated path as we approached Wendover because of HS2 preparation works, but this was clearly marked and easy to follow....

This route was awesome! I thought the departure from High Wycombe was really pleasant, and then the walk through the area around the Higherden Manor was gorgeous! There were just so many stretches of lovely hills, open countryside, enchanting wooded areas, etc. I really thought this was a fantastic route with varied country; it was very enjoyable. Overall, I really loved this route!...

At this time of year (August) the path on the west side of Hampden Road is a little overgrown, with the nettles, brambles and thistles being quite noticeable for someone wearing shorts (as I was), but apart from that the walk was very straightforward and easy to follow....

I first walked this route in April 2021, describing it as “A very enjoyable walk through the Chilterns.” I walked it again today (29 August 2022) and have upgraded my rating from 4 to 5 stars, as it really is a very good walk....
