Help connect Poole

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Poole’s Slow Ways.

An easy and pleasant walk, mostly flat and on well-made paths, which takes you from the old town of Poole, along the waterfront of the park and many bays between Poole and Sandbanks, then along the busy esplanade between the beach and the low cliffs to Bournemouth pier and town. There are plenty of facilities along the way and it is very accessible. Highly recommended....

This is a very good route, as long as you are prepared for the long distance of walking on the cycle route beside the busy road from Wareham all the way to Upton....

Bus route between Poole and Wimborne is easy with plenty of stopping off points for refreshments (Upton Country Patk has a lovely cafe or plenty on Poole quay)....

Lovely walk with some stunning views - Woodbarrow Fort is worth a very short detour. Care is needed when crossing some busy roads. Take food and water/drinks....

When you cross the bridge and get onto the A350 - Blandford Road, the road is very busy and the walk to the turn-off point at Blandford Close is further than you would think. If you take Sandy Lane as opposed to Blandford Road, it will be a more tranquil route to navigate the remainder of Upton! Turning off at the Adventure Pirate facility on Post Green Road, you'll note I took a path which went at right angles to the road, the routemap showed a different more cross country route but I could not find a path to match and hence kept going straight, this was still a nice walk in and of itself until hitting the Blandford Road once more1 After English Oak Vineyard you will cross Castle Farm Road onto Sandy Lane. When you finally get to the Dullar Lane / A31 junction, you will need your wits about you to cross as the road is very busy so take heed....

The first part of the route handrails Holes bay on the left following signs for Upton country park, (Photo 1, don't miss the path off to the right to take you up and over the train line). Follow signs for Broadstone along the Roman road and up onto the Castleman trail, (Photo 3 up the steep path to the right before passing under the bridge)....

The second half, from Organford till Poole, is a tar road, with an short but uncomfortable section along the A35, and after crossing the A35, one walks for miles along a monotonous and noisy road through residential areas till the finish. For the section after crossing the A35 just before Upton till the finish, there is an alternative to be considered: the Poole Harbour Trail; more info: https://ldwa.org.uk/ldp/members/show_path.php?path_name=Poole+Harbour+Trail....

A mix of landscapes along this pleasant walk from Poole to Bournemouth, nearly all of it alongside the sea except for the Sandbanks Rd stretch. Once you come off at Shore Road and hit the beach there is a nice cafe for a snack and coffee before walking the rest of the way along the Promenade, which is wide and flat enough for both cyclists and walkers....

Walk this route

The road walking from Wareham to Upton is fairly unavoidable, but the uninteresting urban road route from Upton to Poole can be avoided by re-routing round the east side of Holes Bay, which I've suggested in warpoo two. Alternatively if you wanted to go via Hamworthy you could follow the Castleman trailway from Upton into Upton Country Park, continue through the park to Symes Road, then round the west shore of Holes Bay to Twin Sails bridge, with short sections on quiet backstreets to avoid muddy bits....

There is a short distance along some road, a mile or so, before coming to the top of Evening Hill, here there is a set of steps, to the right, which can take you off the road and along the sea edge, for a short distance, before returning to the path alongside the road....

From Poole railway station follow cycle route 25 as it goes through a little bit of Poole shopping centre then round the edge of Parkstone Bay. Leaving the cycle route continue along past the marina. Just before Bournemouth Pier the route actually takes a flight of steps up the cliff face (just before Amusement arcade)....
