As another reviewer said, the route closely follows National Cycle Route 8 so navigation is very straightforward....

This is a great route through the steep wooded / forested valley from Macynlleth, up to the Mach Loop viewing point (if you don't see any planes there's still great views of Cadiar Idris) and then through lovely woodlands to Dolgellau. To get to the Mach Loop viewing point you need a small detour around SH 75876 13592 towards the A487 across some upland grass....

This is a reasonably direct route offering many good views and passing places of interest ,I walked from Machynlleth to Tywyn (5/9/23)Leaving Mach one passes the site of the bridge under construction that will replace the old narrow stone bridge over the Dovey.Crossing the bridge one continues west along the A493 west after a short distance one comes to a way marked road on the right (care needed on this section no pavement)A steep climb on a tarmacked road takes you to a path on the left to Foel Goch and eventually on to Pennal (pub/no shops)crossing the A493 one soon comes to the driveway Plas Talgarth(hotel/timeshare complex)follow the way marked route through the site and on towards crossing the A493 this will take oneto anarrow tarmacked road which will take one eventually to the of start of the panoramic walk(track)several steep climbs along this section. This almost takes one to Aberdovey, leaving the road one takes a path to the right to cemetery and the A493 again!Crossing the road follow the track across the railway line and onto Aberdovey golf course turning right and follow the way marked route toTywyn.Currently there are no trains running on this line from Sept/Nov(Mach toPwllheli)bus replacement and standard public transport do run but only every two hours.I enjoyed walking this route, there were no obstructions or access issues. This not a difficult route to follow but a navigational aid and paper map could prove useful....

The stream was fast and deep at the time, but I would have been fine doing that too....

There are at least two stream/river crossings (you will get wet feet), hills to climb and no places to pick up supplies along the way......

danravenellison added Maccar three, a new walk from Machynlleth to Carno
Walk this routeIt explains why there is a footpath over the hill leading to the river here, and why the house here is called Penybont (end of the bridge), but it's not a bridge now and the footpath up the hill to the south wasn't evident on the ground - a crumbly stile was the only clue. We walked along the main road to join up what we hope will work for a newly minted Macmal three....

Glantwymyn to Mallwyd is straight and easy, walking on the valley road on the other side of the river to the A-road....

I got the train from Aberystwyth to Machynlleth which has some really good views. This is a hilly wooded area for a good section of the walk near Machynlleth and its really beautiful and peaceful to walk....
Neil Summersgill
I walked this route from Mach, and got as far as Aberdyfi before time ran out and I had to descend (via the coastal path local circular loop) to make sure I got the train in time....

This route uses the Macmal2 route at the Machynlleth end and the section to and from Mallwyd is along the lovely minor road following The river Dovey upstream, crossing near the village of Glantwymyn....

The route shown is on a bridleway, which may be more suitable on horse-back but not suitable for a slowway....

An excellent route, varied with coastal walking, wetland nature reserve and woodland. Mostly following the route of the Wales Coast Path - so well signed. Refreshments available at Borth....

It is challenging enough to be interesting, but it is all on the Wales coastal path so it’s difficult to get lost....
Joanna Engelkamp
Really satisfying route although I couldn't walk it in a day and camped overnight by the lake....

Basically follows National Cycle Route 8, so you're on quiet backroads most of the time, usually with no pavement but quiet enough for this to be OK....

Hugh Hudson added Maccar two, a new walk from Machynlleth to Carno
Walk this routeWell, except that it often follows path hewn or worn right out of the rock, including the roman steps down to Mach, so it's not exactly new! I did it in three chunks, using the train - Aberystwyth to Borth, Borth to Dyfi Junction (a not-too-far detour off the path) and then Dyfi Junction to Mach....

However, there’s a section of rough track between Cefn-cynhafal Farm and Bwlch Farm which had a large patch of quagmire when I walked it (in August)....

All of it is well-marked and easy to navigate but be prepared for mud, water and uneven ground, especially on the track that runs NW of Happy Valley (to near Bryncrug). Also, this track is used by trail bikers so may be more peaceful on weekdays....
