Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

23 Aug 2024Great route and very scenic. I encountered no access issues and surface is good, mainly small lanes and cycle paths. As another reviewer said, the route closely follows National Cycle Route 8 so navigation is very straightforward. This is a strenuous route, there are lots of ups and downs. The hill on the lane out of Aberfenlli is long and brutally steep; it is worth it for the scenery though, take plenty of breathers to enjoy it. Not many amenities on the way so stock up at either end.

03 Aug 2024Very easy route to follow - so well sign posted (sustrans route 8) ! This is a great route through the steep wooded / forested valley from Macynlleth, up to the Mach Loop viewing point (if you don't see any planes there's still great views of Cadiar Idris) and then through lovely woodlands to Dolgellau. Corris is a lovely little village worth a slight detour for. I stopped at Idris Stores for a cold drink and a panini.
To get to the Mach Loop viewing point you need a small detour around SH 75876 13592 towards the A487 across some upland grass. Be careful there is a steep drop here. I parked at Macynlleth station and caught the T2 TrawsCymru to Dolgellay and walked back. Sustrans 8 is mostly cyclists with the some walkers there were a few cars but not anything to worry about. Its all tarmac so I put my trail running shoes on which have a lot of cushioning.
Re Joe's comment about the works around Macynlleth : these are all complete now and there is a good path along the river into Macynlleth. You can bike the whole thing as well - obviously.

03 Dec 2022Basically follows National Cycle Route 8, so you're on quiet backroads most of the time, usually with no pavement but quiet enough for this to be OK. I did it Mach to Dolg, they're building a new flyover in Mach, over the river, so the footpath through the meadow is a bit sketchy but should be maintained during the works. After that, it's backroads up to Corris, passing CAT (centre for alt technology) along the way. Idris Stores in Corris is your last chance to stock up on supplies before you head out past the old quarry in Aberleffeni, and up into the hills. Then it's down the other side, cross the A487, up a little through pleasant wood pasture before descening down to Dolgellau. Overall, a lovely route on foot or bike, and well signposted (NCR8) throughout. Enjoy!.
