Help connect Hambrook

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Hambrook’s Slow Ways.

The inaccurate part of the plot was along the busy main road, Three Brooks Lane, past the Tesco petrol station, close to the suggested entrance to Willow Brook shopping centre where the route ends....

I can only presume that the previous three reviewers followed the Frome Valley Walkway, crossing two bridges, without noticing that they had gone off this Slow Ways route....

As expected, it was largely an easy walk using well established and gravelled lanes, and quiet minor roads. This is to prevent traffic problems while the A432 is closed - there is no actual obstruction on the road, and it is in fact quite pleasant to walk down it knowing there will be no traffic at all!...

Walked this route in reverse from Hambrook to Wick, was a decent route - some decent views, not too hard going terrain wise but the usual turn stiles & other obstacles which would make this route harder, potentially blocked at points, for wheelchair users etc....

The first mile or so is easy enough on the roads and paths when you cross the M4 don’t take to obvious foot and cycle path instead cross this and the correct path is just after the cycle path and is signed but we missed it initially. The next part the route takes you across a field with no clear path we went round one side but met the path at the bottom of the field as you enter the trees which suggests the actual path we should have taken goes the opposite way around the field....

We follow the road to its end by the bridge over the river Frome, then follow the Frome Valley Way under the M4 and the A417 to a T junction where we turn right into a small housing estate. We follow the road left to a bridge where we cross the river, and follow the Frome Valley Way again. We follow Stapleton Road up the hill then use the cycle track which continues under and alongside the motorway for some distance into Riverside Park, where we take the right hand path then return to the river and follow Wellington Road, then the paved path to Champion Square....

We start through the shopping centre and continue on a cycle track that reminded me of Milton Keynes, then follow a railway and cross a bridge into Wapley Common - here I stayed on the wide tarmac path rather than trying to follow the right of way around the west edge. Here we take the road opposite that climbs steeply up Ivory Hill, then take a path that leads into a small area of access land, which is mostly filled with holly bushes - there is a visible path which is easy enough to follow but quite difficult to use without being scratched by the rampant holly. At Down Road we cross the river and follow The Dingle, a riverside residential street, then take the track left that leads to a bridge, which we cross and continue on a good track (less of a hill than the OS 1:25000 suggests), then turn right when we reach the road, then take three left turns to reach and cross the river again....

A really nice walk but there are a couple of minor blocked access issues on the existing plot at Park Lane (w3w budget.tucked.daydream) and at Boxhedge Farm (vent.utter.octagonal), plus altered footpath routing through the golf course at Kendleshire. Walk this route

Lovely walk if you are prepared to get muddy, even in dry months there can be some lingering mud north of the viaduct/Huckford quarry. Also be careful if you are taking a dog, there can be cattle and occasionally bulls in the fields north of Huckford. Wouldn't suggest this route is suitable for mobility issues or young children in the winter, especially if it has been wet....

The highlight is the Huckford Viaduct which you pass under just before a nature reserve and the slow way takes the pleasing detour over Bury Hill fort. Good access to buses, pubs at both ends and a pleasing church in Frampton Cotterell....

Walk this route

It is easy to navigate as it follows the clearly-signed Frome Valley walkway pretty much all the way, and there is a frequent bus service that passes both ends. If you want a shorter walk and to make less of an effort, keep following the Frome Valley Walkway straight along the quiet lane....
