Description

Almost exactly the same as Hamwic one but routes around the blocked access on that route through Lodge Farm and tweaks the route a little either way onto better pathways in linear parks and open spaces through Emerson’s Green.

Note that the plot of the route through Shortwood Golf Course (which appeared disused in November 22) is a little approximate on the ground, as is the route of the public footpath marked on the OS map.

Also note that from October 22 the bus service from The Crown at Hambrook, where this route starts/ends no longer has a regular bus service, as it has been withdrawn. The public transport link for Hambrook is now on the Bristol dual carriageway ring road to the south. Walk down the B4058 to the south to the junction with this road and the bus stops lie a little to the east

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Walked this route with my team as part of a community event. We did it in reverse, Hambrook to Wick. The route was not too hard, definitely doable for people used to walking up to a couple of hours. Due to various stiles, uneven ground & general obstacles, it is not suitable for wheelchair users, buggies, etc. At Avon Alpacas in Siston, you do have to walk up the driveway and then the path takes you around the house to the right and through to the alpaca fields. The alpacas were very interested in us, which was great. There were a couple of fields with electric wire that we had to climb under / over, thankfully they were not live. All in all, a very nice walk on an exceptionally hot day, ending with a well-deserved drink and lunch at the pub in Wick.

Walked this route in reverse from Hambrook to Wick, was a decent route - some decent views, not too hard going terrain wise but the usual turn stiles & other obstacles which would make this route harder, potentially blocked at points, for wheelchair users etc. The initial part by Hambrook was lovely, and an area I didn't even realise existed in Bristol. The route even took you part horses & Llamas! We did this as apart of a walk to Bath from Bristol, and what's quite nice is the route stops in the Wick, which is lovely and provided a good break for a pub lunch.
Overall the route seemed safe, easy to access and accurate & I'd be happy to walk it again.

20 Sep 2023 Summer

We completed this route at the beginning of September on a baking hot day. This was done in reverse to wick where we continued on to Bath. The first mile or so is easy enough on the roads and paths when you cross the M4 don’t take to obvious foot and cycle path instead cross this and the correct path is just after the cycle path and is signed but we missed it initially. Looking at the route beforehand I got the impression it is initially through housing estates but the routes seems to skirt the edges. When you get to the bridge inn the footpath opens after a few hundred meters to open fields with an obvious path across which diverges from the mapped route. The next part the route takes you across a field with no clear path we went round one side but met the path at the bottom of the field as you enter the trees which suggests the actual path we should have taken goes the opposite way around the field. As you come through Siston the path looks to go straight up a private driveway but this was correct and the path continues beside Avon Alpacas. As you approach wick it is easy to miss the signpost off Holbrook lane. As mentioned. This was part one of a two part route and we completed the first leg with lunch in the Rose and Crown.
