Help connect Charlbury
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Charlbury’s Slow Ways.

Walking from Charlbury, I missed the path only once, at Poffley End, the path continues as you cross the road, but it's not that clear whether to go left or right of the fence....

On the last 50 yards or so north of the B4022, the gap in the hedge to your right is tempting, and leads to the stile, but the actual route is straight ahead, where there is a more manageable gate. Having said that, the Witcha two route is better, avoiding the short walk along the B4022....

One tricky part if walking in the direction I took: as you enter North Leigh from Church Road, the actual track implies that you take a small path just before the road junction....

Through the village, you meet the B4022 and walk along a narrow grass verge for maybe 150 metres (take care - fast traffic) and keep an eye out for the path entrance on the other side of the road. You then enter Cornbury Park and follow a well signed path through the park and then into Charlbury....

I haven't walked this route but we have heard that the section between Ditchley Estate and Fulwell is not a public right of way. Unfortunately I don't have information on the exact location but wanted you to be aware if you're looking to test walk and review the route. If you create a Chaded two as a result please let me know by commenting on this review....

After crossing the main road (B4026) after Dean, look for the Salt Way restricted byway and an enjoyable route to Chipping Norton, along tracks and across fields and meadows, including a nature reserve by Glyme river (we didn’t detour to look around it but noticed a stile into it). We also walked another footpath route from Chipping Norton to Dean as a potential alternative to avoid the quiet country lane out of Dean but although enjoyable, it passed over quite a few fields and narrow paths and included a stile, so Chicha One and Two are probably better, especially if wet weather....

Lovely route out of Chipping Norton, using tracks through fields and woodland with a few small Holloway’s thrown in, and nice dry paths. The middle section is mostly on tarmac and though the roads are very quiet there, it’s a bit much for the pooch’s paws. The final third is pretty but the paths were wet and sloppy even in summer....

There is a potentially dangerous stile on this route as you join the Charlbury Road at Leafield. The stile is through a tall roadside hedge, dropping onto a very narrow verge straight onto a fairly busy 'B' road on a blind bend. Alternative route created WitCha Two which avoids this stile....

A bus connects the towns of Charlbury and Witney so it is possible to walk in one direction. Both towns have parking and refreshments and the villages of Leafield and Ramsden also have pubs if you're there when they're open. The walk itself is very pleasant, particularly the section through Cornbury Park....

A very enjoyable walk between Chipping Norton and Charlbury on well established footpaths and minor roads....

One style at the back of Blenheim Palace park, but often very narrow footpaths, so not suitable for any wheels....

The section south of the B4026 (roughly 1/3 of the way from Chipping Norton to Charlbury) is tarmac, single track road with not great visibility - I didn't encounter any cars on a Sunday morning but depending on when the verges are cut and how fast the cars would be going it might be unpleasant....

There are no real landmarks on route, just fields and occasional small woodlands....

As other reviewers have noted, this route is mostly off road, and the roads that it does follow are pretty quiet....

An excellent route through beautiful Cotswold countryside (photo 2), historic villages, and Blenheim Park mostly following the Oxfordshire Way. Only access issues are gates and steps (Stonesfield Steps, photo 1) into and within Blenheim Park. Currently (July 2022) a small diversion over the Grand Bridge due to lake dredging at Blenheim, but this affords even better views of the Palace and Park!...

As currently mapped the stretch from Shipton to Ascott includes a very rural level crossing - take care! This section also gets extremely muddy in winter. The walk from Ascott to Charlbury via Chilton and Shorthampton is a joy without even a stile in sight....
