Connect Witney with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Witney to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?
Give a hike!Help connect Witney
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Witney’s Slow Ways.

Starting on a relatively quiet road from Burford town centre there is some road walking with no footpath until you reach the first clearly marked footpath across the water meadows. The stretch from Swinbrook to Worsham is easy walking in open countryside. Be aware of the very final stretch of road into Old Minster. The final stretch into Witney is easy walking, the only challenge being which of the many paths up into the new housing estates to take....

A pleasant, gentle walk with a mix of about half road walking and half field walking. The route passes through a large solar farm, and the path is easy to follow. At the end point, there’s a Co-op for resupply....

It starts off in Witney with a road walk through the town, followed by mostly fields and a small patch of woodland....

A portion of the walk is directly through a solar farm, while that portion is easy to walk, it doesn't offer much in terms of scenery....

The path follows a circular walk path for a fair bit, and the route is quite well maintained. Even when walking through fields there is a clear path where one could follow. There is a short portion where due to erosions and rain the ground became very wet and muddy, with some exposed tree roots and trunks hindering progress....

I walked from Shipton-under-Wychwood to Witney in August 2024. The weather had been dry for quite a while, so I didn't experience the muddy sections mentioned by the previous reviewer - though I recognise the sections mentioned and yes, they'll be very muddy.....
Martin McGovern
I agree with the previous viewer - mostly fine, but - the section on Riding Lane is on-road, with twists and turns, and no verges....
Martin McGovern
Walking from Charlbury, I missed the path only once, at Poffley End, the path continues as you cross the road, but it's not that clear whether to go left or right of the fence....

On the last 50 yards or so north of the B4022, the gap in the hedge to your right is tempting, and leads to the stile, but the actual route is straight ahead, where there is a more manageable gate. Having said that, the Witcha two route is better, avoiding the short walk along the B4022....
Martin McGovern
Its an interesting route but not suitable for pushchairs/buggies or wheelchairs as very muddy and a gate and stile nearer to Shipton. 307189 to 308181 busy-ish Road but wide verge. 324163 to 323155 narrow road with no verge nearer to Leafield....
CazMac
Mostly a good walk but the road between Leafield and Crawley is fast with short sightlines and little to no verge. Have submitted ShiWit2 and will review that March 2024....

CazMac added Shiwit two, a new walk from Shipton under Wychwood to Witney
Walk this routeThe 1.5 miles from Carterton to Brize Norton was not enjoyable, following main roads. St Britius church at Brize Norton (C12/13) may be of interest but is only open on Sundays. The footpaths from Brize Norton to Curbridge were mainly lacking signage....
Julian
There is a potentially dangerous stile on this route as you join the Charlbury Road at Leafield. The stile is through a tall roadside hedge, dropping onto a very narrow verge straight onto a fairly busy 'B' road on a blind bend. Alternative route created WitCha Two which avoids this stile....
Sandsayre
A bus connects the towns of Charlbury and Witney so it is possible to walk in one direction. Both towns have parking and refreshments and the villages of Leafield and Ramsden also have pubs if you're there when they're open. The walk itself is very pleasant, particularly the section through Cornbury Park....
Sandsayre
These stiles and the kissing gates towards Witney, along with the possibility of mud and some short steep sections render this route unsuitable for wheels....
Martin McGovern
I walked this route from Witney to Bampton, the opposite direction to the previous reviewer. I agree with all the points made: in particular the comment about the footpath beside Barleypark Farm. I walked this in May and it was getting overgrown - secateurs might be useful if walking later in the year, and I'd recommend leg coverings as there were quite a lot of nettles....
Martin McGovern
This route starts the same way as Witsta One (passing through Ducklington), but thereafter a much larger part of it is off-road. The bridleway section from Ducklington to Yelford is easy to follow, despite the twists and turns. There are no facilities mid-route, with the exception of a single bench at Yelford, making it more attractive for some and less so for others....
Martin McGovern
The Slow Ways route goes straight on and then to the left of Barleypark Farm where a fence has been erected which restricts walkers to a very narrow footpath alongside a hedgerow. Our preferred route was to the right of Barleypark Farm which is slightly longer but more open and you walk down the drive of Barleypark Farm....
Sandsayre
Not including witney and burford there are 4 pubs along this walk....
The Ferret General
This is a lovely enjoyable walk which we did from Standlake to Witney, which are connected by a bus route. The route itself was easy to follow with plenty of way markers and is well maintained. From the highest rural points there are lovely views even though the route is not especially hilly....
Sandsayre
This was a very pleasant walk, fairly straight forward to navigate using the tips already provided in earlier reviews. We took the route through South Leigh churchyard which is signposted to Eynsham and is well signed. If the Church is open it is worth a look inside at the wall paintings....
Sandsayre
It isn't practical for anything with wheels; kissing gates, stiles and steps all exist and aren't really avoidable, and the terrain isn't suitable (narrow, can be muddy)....
Martin McGovern
A substantial part of it, maybe 25%, is on the A415, including significant sections without pavements, so you have to walk on the verge (see picture). I've added Witsta2, which is slightly longer, but spends much more of the route off-road. The section between Witney and Ducklington is the same in both routes....

Martin McGovern added Witsta two, a new walk from Witney to Standlake
Walk this routeNice walk, mostly through fields and woodland, with some walking along very quiet roads. Some of the stiles (especially near Burford) are a little wobbly or under-maintained, so care is advised....
LKenyon
But around South Leigh the route was not clear: to avoid walking across a planted arable field with no obvious path, I ended up diverging slightly and crossing the churchyard there, but the way into the churchyard had a small fixed stone barrier that would be impassable for people in wheelchairs, etc....
Peter Hayward
We lost the path a few times but that was more our fault and at times there are plenty of ways to choose. And a few tweaks and this could be fully bikeable which is great. Not so keen on the road section it was quiet apart from the noise from the A40 but all in all a good walk....
