Help connect Burford

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Burford’s Slow Ways.

Starting on a relatively quiet road from Burford town centre there is some road walking with no footpath until you reach the first clearly marked footpath across the water meadows. The stretch from Swinbrook to Worsham is easy walking in open countryside. Be aware of the very final stretch of road into Old Minster. The final stretch into Witney is easy walking, the only challenge being which of the many paths up into the new housing estates to take....

I was pleasantly surprised to find that this portion of the Monarch's Way is much easier to walk compared to the section further north, where the path is completely overgrown. The route from Northleach to Burford mainly follows very quiet roads, making it quite easy to navigate. This is one of the poshest areas in the UK, with a few charming villages along the way....

Walk this route

The road conditions are very good, with minimal muddy or overgrown paths (at least during the summer). The route ends in a popular tourist town with plenty of pubs and shops for resupply....

It starts off in Witney with a road walk through the town, followed by mostly fields and a small patch of woodland....

Walk this route

The path follows a circular walk path for a fair bit, and the route is quite well maintained. Even when walking through fields there is a clear path where one could follow. There is a short portion where due to erosions and rain the ground became very wet and muddy, with some exposed tree roots and trunks hindering progress....

Walk this route

Though the road is suitable for wheels, some parts are on very narrow road where you would need to find room to move aside for vehicles, which might be a challenge for wheels....

Walk this route

This route is straightforward, mostly level walking along minor roads, though there is off-road into Farmington and between Sherborne and Little Barrington....

Apart from that this walk is still fine and slightly shorter but follows the main Rd from Burford to Carterton for a while so isn't that nice on that section....

A nice walk avoiding any major roads through the beautiful village of Shilton which is the location of the dog and duck pub from Downton Abbey. The rose and crown pub is a great half way stop. The walk is usually not too muddy unless the has been a recent downpour and the countryside path are very well marked....

Walk this route

Avoid using the B road between Shilton and Carterton as it is a fairly busy road with no footpath and the grass verges are very narrow. The section of the walk between Burford and Shilton is lovely. See Burcar Two which follows this route between Burford and Shilton and has an alternate route between Shilton and Carterton....

These stiles and the kissing gates towards Witney, along with the possibility of mud and some short steep sections render this route unsuitable for wheels....

Walk this route

The short section that's on paths just to the north of Swinbrook isn't wheel-friendly, but the diversion via the road isn't a lot longer, and the roads are similarly quiet....

Nice walk, mostly through fields and woodland, with some walking along very quiet roads. Some of the stiles (especially near Burford) are a little wobbly or under-maintained, so care is advised....
