Help connect Auchterarder
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Auchterarder’s Slow Ways.

Some of the paths may be overgrown in the summer, and there may be stock in the fields at the northern end of the route. This is an excellent route, which avoids most of the busy road which Criauc 3 uses in order to pass through Muthill....

This is route connects Crieff and Auchterarder and is the most direct of the four options that I have followed. Auchterarder built its wealth on the handloom weaving industry. For much of its length the route follows the line of the old Crieff Junction Railway that connected Crieff to Gleneagles and closed in 1964. In winter the path is easy to follow except in times of heavy rain and flooding. The path leaves the river on the now closed railway that once connected Crieff to the mainline at Gleneagles. Both Crieff and Auchterarder have a reasonable selection of shops, accommodation, restaurants and cafés. I have given this route five stars as it is enjoyable to walk, it reasonably easy to follow, connects at both ends to public transport and is, currently, the most direct walking route between Crieff and Auchterarder....

Walk this routeThis route connects two country towns each with their own fascinating history. Auchterarder built its wealth on the handloom weaving industry. For much of its length the route follows the line of the old Crieff Junction Railway that connected Crieff to Gleneagles and closed in 1964. On leaving the railway near Auchterarder, there is a short section of road walking on a country road, which though there is not much traffic, it does drive fast....

It is a good route, predominantly along a former railway line. The route follows an old railway line which is overgrown in parts, particularly northwest of Strageath Mill, just south of the river Earn. Unfortunately the former railway line does not provide a suitable alternative walking route so there is no easy short cut avoiding Muthill. My 12th photo shows my friend struggling along a route full of brambles, just south of the river Earn, west of Strageath Mill....

F Berry added Criauc three, a new walk from Crieff to Auchterarder
Walk this routeIt follows roughly the same route as CriAuc one, but is more direct at the Crieff end. The long detour to Muthil is part of this route as is the long loop around Auchterarder to enter the town. There is a long detour into Muthill that adds over a mile to this route. The route enters Auchterarder on a long loop around to the north of the town which was very muddy and added half mile distance to the route....

With F Berry, we have already found and verified more direct routes at the start and finish and will be heading out in the next few weeks to find a more direct route for the middle section. On leaving the railway near Auchterader, there is a short section of road walking on a country road, which though there is not much traffic, it does drive fast. Only two stars for this route because of it is unnecessarily long, is inaccurately mapped and contains a lot of road walking....

Not suitable for wheelers due to rough, narrow paths, and burn crossing , although the great majority of the route is on good farm and forest tracks and minor roads. South of Coulshill care must be taken to use the right of way, as a new forest track has been constructed going more directly south (this track could possibly be used to avoid the Coul Burn crossing, although the distance is greater). Before the right of way begins its ascent, at a gate and signpost, take a trodden route through the bracken to cross the Coul Burn where there is a waymarker post on the eastern bank. If heading north westwards on this route, the waymarker beside the burn can be spotted from the track. Heading eastwards, after the end of the forest track, (OS shows this to be at Linn Hill), a minor path is followed for a few yards. Heading westwards, before Linn Hill, about 50m before the end of the forest track, there is a waymarker (partially hidden by vegetation) on the right indicating the route to the 2 stream crossings....

Crossing the Coul Burn could be a problem if there has recently been a lot of rain, but the new forest tracks in upper Glen Coul provide an alternative, although the distance is greater. The track becomes rough again, then before the right of way begins its ascent, at a gate and signpost, take a trodden route through the bracken to cross the Coul Burn where there is a waymarker post on the eastern bank. If heading north westwards on this route, the waymarker beside the burn can be spotted from the track. This path could be avoided by using forest tracks and the Dunning Glen road, via Littlerig, but this is considerably further. Forest tracks are followed on the northern flanks of Innerdouny Hill (currently undergoing forestry work) until a minor path towards Coalcraigy Hill is reached. Head along beside the field boundary, then cross a fence on a stile, and head southwards down the hill on grass next to the forest, using a trodden path....

The route is accurately mapped, but does require careful navigation particularly at two points: Coul Glen where the path crosses from one side of the valley to the other; and, near Linn Hill where a fairly recently constructed Core Path connects a hill track with a forest track. I gave this route 4 stars because it leads you through less visited terrain with fantastic views but the high proportion of road walking at the Milnathort end is a bit of a downside....
Johanna B
Around Dunning Glen the route is longer than necessary as a shorter route is available from the Dunning Glen car park directly up the side of the forest to the forest track. It follows roads, farm / forest tracks and paths and is an enjoyable route....

F Berry added Aucmil two, a new walk from Auchterarder to Milnathort
Walk this routeLeaving Auchterarder the path follows the old postman, Johnnie Mathias's route, climbing steadily up hill, and then transfers onto quiet country roads before heading into the hills on farm tracks. The first part is on a track, but then the path heads off left on a narrow footpath and requires a burn crossing before heading up through new tree planting to the forest track on the other side of the glen. Another section follows on forest tracks (currently restricted access due to felling) before turning left onto a narrow path to join up with forest tracks rising into the hills on the Kinross side of the hills....

Walk this routeThis Slowways route is generally easy to follow but need amendment in the middle section where a path outside of the forest is easier to follow....

A much better route would be to follow the gap to the east of the old forest, on the flanks of Coalcraigy Hill. Use a path along the fence line to gain the original route along forest tracks. North of Innerdouny Hill the Slowways route takes a short cut through the forest....

It is mainly tarmacked up to Bellshill, then a trodden path, muddy in places, leads towards the quiet road up to Coulshill, which is gained via a stile. On the east side of the burn a vague route heads up to the forest track but the ground has been recently planted with young trees so is uneven. Note that the most obvious route on the map is to follow the track through the Coulshill Farm Yard. From Heatherie Knowe car park Aucmil one heads south along a very quiet road, then north east on a forest track signposted to Middle Rig. (First 11 photos) The route between Littlerig and Stronachie/Middle Rig heads along good forest tracks, and is straightforward, except where two forest tracks do not link up. A few years ago a path was made linking the ends of the forest tracks, crossing two streams, but the link is now hard to find from the west. Heading eastwards, after the end of the forest track, (OS shows this to be at Linn Hill), a trodden path is followed for a few yards. Heading westwards, about 50m before the end of the forest track, there was a waymarker on the right indicating the linking route...

There are 2 sections where the route follows field edges, rough tracks and trodden paths, and there are some pedestrian gates which would probably be difficult if not impossible for wheelers. Off route, about half way, lies the hamlet of Forteviot where there is a bus stop for an irregular service between Auchterarder and Perth, but no shops. From Auchterarder the route follows a footway beside the A824. At Nether Coul it takes a signposted path around the edge of a field on a trodden route. It heads away from the noisy A9 to Drumtogle where the route is signposted, but the track shown on the map does not exist. There are many possible routes, all downhill, into the city centre, and this route is as good as any as it avoids the main roads, and in summer there is a cafe in the South Inch park....

It then uses a new bridge over the Water of May (old bridge upstream is dangerous) and continues on a farm track through woodlands to exit the estate at a locked gate (easy to climb over). Just east of Forgandenny Primary School the route uses a road (gap beside gate) which is marked as 'No unauthorised access', but 100yds down the path there is a fingerpost indicating a path through recent woodland , then the route crosses through a field – there may be livestock here, or crops, at other times of year, but the path is well trodden. (An easy alternative route would take you on the road which goes to Forgandenny Cottages, and the Freeland Farm access track.). Altogether a good route, only deserving 3 stars due to the considerable amount of road walking, and the locked gate at Invermay....

The map shows a way to get over the road via a bridge when in fact you go left at the end of the street and under the road through a tunnel. Not accessible to all due to the condition of the path at the higher part of the walk....
