Help connect Crieff

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Crieff’s Slow Ways.

This is a great route between Crieff and Perth that is easy to divide into shorter sections with connecting buses if the full distance is a step too far. The route out of Crieff climbs steeply up from the town centre past Morrison's Academy and then goes along the side of a bit of the golf course before crossing the A85. At Methven, the route follows the A85 for just over a kilometre. Follow the one that goes to the right and you drop down through some woods (keep your eyes open for roe deer) and past Methven loch before arriving in Almondbank. The Lade path is one of the well kept secrets of Perth and is an amazing wildlife corridor leading all the way into the City centre - past the former city mill....

Walk this route

This is a really nice route between Crieff and Perth but it does have some inaccurate mapping, one piece of which meant that we ended up wandering around the outside of a piece of woodland surrounded by deer fencing trying to find our way to the track followed by the Slowway. We refound the Slowway route eventually by deciding to go a different way and then finding a connecting path. After a discussion with F Berry, we have decided to remap this route so that it is easier for future slowwayers to follow....

Some of the paths may be overgrown in the summer, and there may be stock in the fields at the northern end of the route. This is an excellent route, which avoids most of the busy road which Criauc 3 uses in order to pass through Muthill....

Walk this route

This is route connects Crieff and Auchterarder and is the most direct of the four options that I have followed. Auchterarder built its wealth on the handloom weaving industry. For much of its length the route follows the line of the old Crieff Junction Railway that connected Crieff to Gleneagles and closed in 1964. In winter the path is easy to follow except in times of heavy rain and flooding. The path leaves the river on the now closed railway that once connected Crieff to the mainline at Gleneagles. Both Crieff and Auchterarder have a reasonable selection of shops, accommodation, restaurants and cafés. I have given this route five stars as it is enjoyable to walk, it reasonably easy to follow, connects at both ends to public transport and is, currently, the most direct walking route between Crieff and Auchterarder....

This route connects two country towns each with their own fascinating history. Auchterarder built its wealth on the handloom weaving industry. For much of its length the route follows the line of the old Crieff Junction Railway that connected Crieff to Gleneagles and closed in 1964. On leaving the railway near Auchterarder, there is a short section of road walking on a country road, which though there is not much traffic, it does drive fast....

Walk this route

It is a good route, predominantly along a former railway line. The route follows an old railway line which is overgrown in parts, particularly northwest of Strageath Mill, just south of the river Earn. Unfortunately the former railway line does not provide a suitable alternative walking route so there is no easy short cut avoiding Muthill. My 12th photo shows my friend struggling along a route full of brambles, just south of the river Earn, west of Strageath Mill....

Walk this route

It follows roughly the same route as CriAuc one, but is more direct at the Crieff end. The long detour to Muthil is part of this route as is the long loop around Auchterarder to enter the town. There is a long detour into Muthill that adds over a mile to this route. The route enters Auchterarder on a long loop around to the north of the town which was very muddy and added half mile distance to the route....

With F Berry, we have already found and verified more direct routes at the start and finish and will be heading out in the next few weeks to find a more direct route for the middle section. On leaving the railway near Auchterader, there is a short section of road walking on a country road, which though there is not much traffic, it does drive fast. Only two stars for this route because of it is unnecessarily long, is inaccurately mapped and contains a lot of road walking....

Walk this route

I have given it 3 stars due to incorrect mapping, and because the stream at Loch Meallbroden could be tricky to cross, and the route west of Methven is not easy due to locked gates and rough ground (but this can be avoided if a minor road is followed instead). The route follows farm and forest tracks, paths, quiet roads and the pavement beside the A85 for occasional short stretches. From the centre of Crieff the route heads up Ferntower Road to an entrance to the Golf Course. Two stretches of very quiet road follow, linked by forest tracks through Gorthy Wood, and farm tracks from Keillour to Grundcruie. The route then takes some very pretty paths down into Methven Den and into Methven. But from Drumbauchly the easiest and quickest way into Methven is straight down the road, taking the Methven Den paths if time and inclination permit by briefly doubling back up the Newbigging Farm access track just after entering the village. The route heads westwards out of the village along the footway beside the A85, then it takes a signposted path towards Almondbank. East of Methven Castle, at a signpost well into the wood, the route takes a right turn towards Methven Loch (note that the paths shown on OS base mapping are not shown correctly). Then it follows paths and footways beside the road before returning to the lade at Ruthven Lade just north of Tarry Row....
