Description
This route is predominantly the same as Aucbri1, omitting the tricky overgrown stretch along the top of the steep slope above the Water of May. I have shown the crossing of the A9 at Auchterarder correctly, through an underpass.
The route is on tarmac all the way from Auchterarder to Green of Invermay, nearly 8 miles. It uses pavements and minor roads, which are relatively quiet with mainly good sightlines and usually a verge beside them.
From Auchterarder High Street the route heads down Ruthven Street. It crosses the A9 using an underpass. Then the route runs parallel to the A9 for a while so is quite noisy. Care must be taken where the route, on the road B8062, runs beneath a railway bridge where sightlines are poor.
A shop, pub and bus stops are available in Dunning.
At Green of Invermay the route enters the grounds of Invermay, through a gateway and past a gate lodge. It looks fairly intimidating, as there is a sign indicating Cctv coverage, however there is another sign saying 'Dog on Lead' so walkers must be expected occasionally.
500m up the Invermay driveway the route takes the track over the westernmost bridge and follows it through woodlands to the road junction at Invermay Cottage, unfortunately the gate here is locked but easily climbed, and there is another sign encouraging dogs on leads, so walkers are obviously expected. From here the route uses 'walker and cycle friendly' minor roads to Garblie Wood. It follows signposted paths and farm tracks to Forgandenny, and onwards to Bridge of Earn. There were fairly muddy in places when I explored them, but it was January

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

20 Apr 2023I walked this route over a number of visits, between January and April, so the weather was varied.
The first 8 miles, from Auchterarder to Green of Invermay, is along first pavements then minor roads, with part of it being on a slightly busier road, the B8062. It is pleasant enough, usually a verge in which to stand while vehicles pass. The road bends where a railway crosses over it and sightlines are poor: care should be taken here. Noise from the A9 is intrusive nearer Auchterarder. The scenery, of the Ochils to the south, and the hills of Perthshire to the north, viewed over farmland from the road, is interesting even in the winter months.
Just before Dunning there is a large monument beside the road, a memorial to a witch, Maggie Wall. In Dunning there is a shop, pub, and the village is on the bus route between Bridge of Earn and Auchterarder, so some of the road walking could be bypassed, although buses are only every 2 hours, on weekdays. The route could also be joined at Forteviot, (through which the bus also passes), there is a good, signposted track between Forteviot and Green of Invermay.
East of Dunning the roads used are all 'Walking and Cycle friendly' roads, with a speed limit of 40mph. At Green of Invermay the Invermay estate is entered, with intimidating signs about CCTV, the route passes close to the gateway lodge and up a driveway. It then uses a new bridge over the Water of May (old bridge upstream is dangerous) and continues on a farm track through woodlands to exit the estate at a locked gate (easy to climb over).
More quiet roads (40mph max speed) for about a mile, then the route uses a path signposted to Forgandenny through unlocked gates into Garblie Wood. Just north of Garblie Wood the path was very muddy but it is possible to use trodden paths in the adjacent field/rough ground.
Just east of Forgandenny Primary School the route uses a road (gap beside gate) which is marked as 'No unauthorised access', but 100yds down the path there is a fingerpost indicating a path through recent woodland , then the route crosses through a field – there may be livestock here, or crops, at other times of year, but the path is well trodden. (An easy alternative route would take you on the road which goes to Forgandenny Cottages, and the Freeland Farm access track.)
Once the route leaves the farm access track it is very muddy, but a pleasant route nonetheless. It regains the farm access track briefly then heads through a gate into a strip of woodland, passing an ancient windmill. The route passing Dunbarney House is easy to follow and was quite busy on a Sunday afternoon in January. On gaining the B935 there was no signpost indicating the route we had just used. Footway into Bridge of Earn.
Altogether a good route, only deserving 3 stars due to the considerable amount of road walking, and the locked gate at Invermay.
