Help connect Ashtead
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Ashtead’s Slow Ways.

Derick Rethans added Oxsash three, a new walk from Oxshott to Ashtead
Walk this routeFrom Ashtead you first go through a little alley (photo #1), before a section along residential roads, and then up a "private" road (photo #2), which then turns into a bridleway (photo #3)....
Derick Rethans
The section onto Prince's Coverts is quite nice (photo #1, #2), but I had to end up backtracking (photo #3), and follow the bridleway/cycle path all the way north to where it meets "the Avenue" (photo #4) and then go down south on that (photo #5)....

Shallow mud in places, unavoidable steps over the motorway make it difficult for wheels....

There's a traffic light crossing at West Street just before Epsom Town Centre....

The route goes down Farm Lane although if you're desperate for a café there's Ashtead Park Garden Centre just off the route in Pleasure Pit Road....
JohnMyerson
A pleasant walk primarily through Ashtead Common and Prince’s Coverts, took about 1h 10m....
Smatticus1991
One short stretch (lane by the Old Star pub) felt a little unwelcoming, but mostly attractive woodland....

340 metres walk on Hurst Lane with no pavement but reasonably quiet....

From Ashtead the route starts on a path along a narrow road (with little traffic, photo #1), after which it goes around the City of London Freemen's School, where a cricket match was being played (photo #2)....
Derick Rethans
I crossed the M25 (photo #3) again at some point, and after some time on residential streets (photo #4) there was a stretch of public footpath-in-the-fences (photos #5, #6, #7)....

Pleasant walk from Epsom Town Centre to Ashtead alongside the railway with plenty of green sections especially through Ashtead Park....

I started this walk at Ashtead Park after having walked from Epsom....

Route: This route mainly tracks via Epsom Common and Ashtead Park, which are a pleasure to walk through. There is a section on the walk after Ashtead Park where there is a need to walk along a road with no pavement, however the road is very quiet and the area is picturesque....

I did this Slow Way as part of a big Waylist that started in Zone 2 of London, and I thought this was one of the nicest sections I tried within the M25....

Given that this is a route connecting two more urban areas, I am rating it with 5 stars to indicate that it does a good job of providing a quiet, straightforward route. I liked that it takes you through pedestrian corridors in neighbourhoods, and there is a nice stretch before you reach the bridge that crosses the motorway. I don't know if there is a better, more direct alternative route, but doing this for the first time, it was quite pleasant....

Nice route - mostly quiet, barring a short stretch parallel to the motorway. Surface is generally good, though a bit soft/muddy in places. One path on the way into Headley easy to miss without a map, but otherwise well signposted and clear....
G-Squirrel
Straightforward route between Ashtead and Leatherhead, with a mixture of roughly 50/50 well-surfaced footpaths and pavements. One pedestrian bridge over the main road, with both ramp and stairs, so probably wheelchair-accessible. Not very exciting, but better than following the main road all the way....
G-Squirrel
The only downside of this route, in my opinion, is the stretch of path which runs parallel to the M25, which is very noisy....
Smatticus1991
A slow way linking Leatherhead to Ashtead was never going to be that exciting or scenic, with the possible exception of one going via Ashtead Common, though admittedly this would have been far too indirect. The best we could have hoped for was one which avoided major roads and was accessible for disabled users, and thankfully, this one is. A safe and functional, if unspectacular route going through quiet residential areas with several schools along the way....
Smatticus1991
I would not walk this route as it has about 500m of walking on the verge of the B280 Fairoak Lane. This road is often busy and is 60mph alongside the verge....
TC
Toilets in car park near The Street in Ashtead and in Epsom Library, Epsom Square or in the Epsom shopping mall....
