Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Leatherhead’s Slow Ways.

You quickly leave Letterhead's residential streets (photo #1) behind with a walk through some footpaths, before heading down a lane with cottages (photo #2). There is then a short section along a lane (photo #12), before you go up a narrow path (photo #13) to the top of the next hill....

When you've left the road, which is not *unsafe*, the route goes through lovely woods (photo #2). After this lovely section, you start to hear the M25 more and more, and eventually you cross under the A243/A244 roundabout (photo #8), and then with a bridge over the M25 (photo #9)....

The start of the walk was a through Cobham town so there was good amount of space for us to walk. I have also never walked around Cobham before really so I am pleased I got to walk around a new area....
Shasmin Rahman
The route is not the safest in parts and goes through a working farm, and passes old derelict farm buildings and heavy farm machinery....
Tim Ramsay
As a minimum requirement I would probably not want to have to dodge traffic as part of a walking route. Many of the paths were also unkept / un-walkable....
David Dear
Route was full of over grown pathways and unclear directions. Lots of busy roads to walk along and cross. Not the safest route for parts of it....
Lauren Munro
I crossed the M25 (photo #3) again at some point, and after some time on residential streets (photo #4) there was a stretch of public footpath-in-the-fences (photos #5, #6, #7)....

After leaving Cobham's shops behind, there is a short section along Downside Road that is not pleasant (photo #1). Cobham Park Road and Downside Common Road require road walking (photo #2, #3), but traffic on a Saturday was pretty much non-existent....
Derick Rethans
I actually started my walk at Horsley Station and joined the Slow Way route at the sports club grounds....

You follow the Mole Gap Trail, the signs are stainless steel embedded in posts, bridges and even the road tarmac, very nice but hard to spot sometimes. The turning is marked in steel in the road tarmac, follow the sign not the map (see picture)....
Strider
These woods are the majority of the walk but unfortunately you get to Oxshott along a horrid road where the pavement keeps ending making the pedestrian cross from one side to another and back again....

I walked this on a warm overcast Saturday afternoon from Dorking to Leatherhead. It's a delightful walk along the river Mole and through Denby's wine estate. There are quite a few stiles, but the route, although it has some steep parts, is easy enough....

Walk this routePicnic spot in the middle and a number of pubs near the route if you need a refreshment stop! Follows the Mole Gap Trail which is well signposted....
Christopher Brown
Paths nearer Headley are quite narrow with some kissing gates which would prevent use of pushchairs etc....
JohnMyerson
A lot of this route is through open fields, so in the winter/early spring might be quite muddy and slippery. Would recommend boots with good grip rather than trying to take alternatives. But there are some really nice parts to it that go through woodland and can offer some nice, open views....

Given that this is a route connecting two more urban areas, I am rating it with 5 stars to indicate that it does a good job of providing a quiet, straightforward route. I liked that it takes you through pedestrian corridors in neighbourhoods, and there is a nice stretch before you reach the bridge that crosses the motorway. I don't know if there is a better, more direct alternative route, but doing this for the first time, it was quite pleasant....

Walk this routeStraightforward route between Ashtead and Leatherhead, with a mixture of roughly 50/50 well-surfaced footpaths and pavements. One pedestrian bridge over the main road, with both ramp and stairs, so probably wheelchair-accessible. Not very exciting, but better than following the main road all the way....

* Duplicates much of the Ashtead - Headley route, backtracking most of the way into Ashtead, which feels like a bit of a detour....

Cobham Road across the M25 has some unpleasent narrow and difficult verges close to the busy road....

Geography aficionados will be interested to see a number of features on route, including the floodplain, meanders, and the severed, dried up remains of an oxbow lake (see picture, though I cannot verify the extent to which this landform has been managed I.e. is it natural or artificial)....
Smatticus1991
A slow way linking Leatherhead to Ashtead was never going to be that exciting or scenic, with the possible exception of one going via Ashtead Common, though admittedly this would have been far too indirect. The best we could have hoped for was one which avoided major roads and was accessible for disabled users, and thankfully, this one is. A safe and functional, if unspectacular route going through quiet residential areas with several schools along the way....
