Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked this on a warm and slightly hazy Saturday morning, from Leatherhead to Ashtead. It had not rained a lot in the last few weeks.

This is a short section between two urban areas (photos #1, #2). Mostly on paved paths, which are easy going. I crossed the M25 (photo #3) again at some point, and after some time on residential streets (photo #4) there was a stretch of public footpath-in-the-fences (photos #5, #6, #7).

Given that this is a route connecting two more urban areas, I am rating it with 5 stars to indicate that it does a good job of providing a quiet, straightforward route. I liked that it takes you through pedestrian corridors in neighbourhoods, and there is a nice stretch before you reach the bridge that crosses the motorway. I don't know if there is a better, more direct alternative route, but doing this for the first time, it was quite pleasant. If I were to walk into London from Leatherhead, this would be a decent route to recommend.

Straightforward route between Ashtead and Leatherhead, with a mixture of roughly 50/50 well-surfaced footpaths and pavements. One pedestrian bridge over the main road, with both ramp and stairs, so probably wheelchair-accessible. Not very exciting, but better than following the main road all the way.

A slow way linking Leatherhead to Ashtead was never going to be that exciting or scenic, with the possible exception of one going via Ashtead Common, though admittedly this would have been far too indirect. The best we could have hoped for was one which avoided major roads and was accessible for disabled users, and thankfully, this one is. A safe and functional, if unspectacular route going through quiet residential areas with several schools along the way. Verifiable.
