Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I started from Ashtead Station (an extra 1km walk). Food shops in the village. Toilets in the car park. I agree that the motorway noise is rather intrusive, but the countryside is quite attractive. 340 metres walk on Hurst Lane with no pavement but reasonably quiet. General Store in Headley village serves drinks too. The church is usually open for visitors.

Nice route - mostly quiet, barring a short stretch parallel to the motorway. Surface is generally good, though a bit soft/muddy in places. One path on the way into Headley easy to miss without a map, but otherwise well signposted and clear.

An easy, pleasant route connecting two villages in the green belt of Surrey. The route is predominantly a gentle upslope which shouldn’t be challenging for anyone. While one stretch of path is quite narrow and overgrown (the path leading off of Greys Lane as you leave Ashtead), there are no stiles or kissing gates, so this should be fairly doable for disabled users. Features of note include the quiet, affluent streets of Ashtead as you make your way South, the Roman Road which bisects a number of wheat fields as you approach the M25, flanked by ancient trees (see picture) and the welcome presence of a pub at the end of the route in Headley (The Cock Inn). The only downside of this route, in my opinion, is the stretch of path which runs parallel to the M25, which is very noisy. While it is impossible to travel between these two villages without crossing the motorway, I feel as though an alternative route could be constructed to avoid close proximity for as long as possible. Nevertheless, this is one of the better routes which I have reviewed and I would be happy to recommend and verify it.
