Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked this on a warm and humid Saturday afternoon, from Ashtead to Banstead. There had been little rain in the previous weeks.

From Ashtead the route starts on a path along a narrow road (with little traffic, photo #1), after which it goes around the City of London Freemen's School, where a cricket match was being played (photo #2). Crossing Farm Lane at Ashtead Park was a little tricky, and at first I had not seen (photo #3) that there was a path (photo #4) on the east side of Farm Lane. After using a public foot path (photo #5) and a quiet street, you cross Langley Vale Road, by pretending to be a horse (photo #6). The view opens up towards Langley Bottom (photo #7), after which there are a series of climbs (photo #8) along and near the Epson race course, before ending up crossing the course itself (photo #9). On the north side there is then a set of paths along roads (photo #10). Crossing Burgh Heath is the last nice section (photo #11), before descending into Banstead Village (photo #12) along roads.

I started this walk at Ashtead Park after having walked from Epsom. Most of the busy roads are crossed at traffic lights except at Epsom Downs where there are central reservations at the mini-roundabout. Shops at each end and café at Epsom Downs. Footpath from Langley Vale Road can have puddles. Good views at Epsom Downs. Overall a most pleasant walk.
