At King’s Reach Business Park the TPT now follows the river, rather than veering slightly inland as the gpx route suggests. For instance, just west of the path under the M60, a section of former railway viaduct is visible across the river, and also there are a few tunnels and caves on the opposite side. The route is slightly hidden behind a long, curved bench at Stockport and clings next to the river....

A very grey February day, but this walk still has moments of interest - it's well used by walkers, dogs, and bikes, and I saw a couple of goosanders on the river....

It's direct, avoids the A6, is as flat as you can get between Stockport and Hazel Grove, safe, accurate and accessible....

Almost completely on tarmac paths, mostly away from roads, suitable for walkers, runners, bikes and dogs but with 2 obstacles that may prevent access to mobility scooters or larger wheelchairs as well as a short distance of gravel path near the start. Once down the 12 steps or long ramp onto the riverside path it becomes much quieter. A narrow 'bike gate' and horse friendly vehicle barrier block the path ( /// horses.galaxy.older) as it becomes a short section of narrow road without a footpath. Another 'bike gate' and vehicle barrier to navigate to rejoin the footpath where horses are usually kept in the field to left behind a wire fence. Near the pyramid the path opens onto a pedestrian junction, (///tiger.march.swear) continue ahead but choose the left entry for a slope to avoid the steps and bike ramp on the right. At a seating area (///larger.tides.hello) keeping to the path to the left will avoid steps and bring you out onto a side street....

This route is fairly direct, as is appropriate for a route through more urban areas, and showcases some nice green bits of Edgeley that the casual walker might not think of - walkers with dogs may like to pause and take in Alexandra Park, or Edgeley Field....

Leaving Stockport Station and climbing up this section is all pavement on a busy road, crossing Wellington Road South and Edward Street. Continue towards Woodbank Ind est and Pear Mill towards Woodbank Memorial Park and Vernon Park. Nice walk through the park until you get to Bredbury Hall and Country Club, It was a really hot sunny day and the walk was nice with some shade. Through the fields crossing the River Goyt. Down Berrycroft and direct pavement walking into Romiley village. Mixed access for wheelchairs or prams but plenty of access on a bicycle....

Leaving Stockport Train station you begin the steep climb up Lancaster Hill. Down some lanes to Reddish Vale Country park. Onto the Trans Pennine Trail, fairlay accessible I saw bikesand horses. Not completely accessible to wheelchairs, due to barriers and Reddish Vale Country Park has a lake and pond and access to the river. Reddish Vale viaduct gives something to stare at, benches along the route so you can take a break finally ending up in probably the most unusual train station Denton. Which took me 15 mins to find access to. All in all I score this a 4, down one star for the amount of road walking to get to the trail....

A lovely route to walk especially after leaving stockport along the river Mersey. Onto the Tranpennine route 62 good access, wheelchairs and prams would be fine, some steps but large enough and not too steep to get access. You now enter Mersey Vale Nature Park. Nice quiet easy walk lots of joggers and dog walkers. Mostly firm ground, gravel and tarmac, through Didsbury along Parrs Wood Lane crossing the road past Tesco onto an off road path. Plenty of green space and places to rest. I would definitely do this walk again for recreation....

A walk on a rainy day from Stockport Train station to Hazel Grove Station. Mainly flat other than a section at the beginning up to the War Memorial and Art Centre. Past our ladies catholic church which is spectacular. Walking through Shaw Heath past shops onto Cale Green, Cale green park is not to be missed in any weather and a local popular dog park. Back onto the main road and onto Mirless fields, access to stepping hill via this route is tricky if on a mobility scooter or wheelchair. BAck onto the A6 right through the end at Hazel grove station. I would walk it again but take more time to visit the church and to spend more time in the parks....

Lovely walk and safe route , easily accessible for wheelchair use, ideal to take children, would highly recommend...

It was pleasant to discover this route and walk it again. The signposting is excellent: the route follows part of the Sustrans Route 62 and the Trans-Pennine Trail, so the signposting for these trails can be used....

Some parts of it are very good and worth keeping - the section from Ladybridge road to Bramhall is lovely to walk (although very muddy after rain), but there are better ways to get from Stockport to that point without diverting to all the parks. Some sections are not doable with a pram when it has been wet....
Eleanor
This is a very walkable route, but with two busy roads (Ladybridge road and Shaw Heath). Ladybridge is pretty unavoidable, but I'd probably skip going down Shaw Heath and go through Edgeley instead like on the other route....
Eleanor
You can navigate the whole route with a pram, and it is a great cycle route....

Here in a very urban setting I'm not sure this route works but wouldn't fail it, there are some good interesting and enjoyable parts but they are so different....

The route left Stockport Station and soon crossed underneath, then alongside the monumental Stockport Viaduct, apparently the largest brick viaduct in the UK with about eleven million bricks, and also past the bus depot....

We attempted to walk LEVSTO 2 from Stockport to Levenshulme yesterday, but were thwarted a little by two building projects north of Stockport station which have closed two of the paths and roads closest to the railway on the east side. Rather than submitting the slightly longer diversion we eventually followed, this is my attempt to provide a more direct route from Stockport station into the shopping centre on Princes Street where we rejoin LEVSTO 2. For a detailed review with pictures see LEVSTO 2....

Walk this routeWe turn left onto Goyt Crescent and right up Goyt Valley Road, then cross a park left and look for the steps down to the path along the bottom (there is a choice of two sets of steps). We cross at the lights, turn right and then turn left down Railway Road to reach the meeting point outside Stockport station....
Hugh Hudson
A direct route a mix of urban pavements, cuts throughs and quality cycle routes....
Ken
Leaving the meeting point outside Stockport station, we go north onto Station Road and almost immediately hit the first problem - the path across the corner is fenced off for building work, so we were forced to follow the road out to Wellington Road South, then go left down Exchange Road to rejoin the route. We follow the TransPennine Trail signs right up Parsonage Street then left along an alleyway that leads back to Wellington Road North, where we turn right and follow the main road for some distance. Beyond the cutting the path goes left to reach Broom Lane, which we cross and go right then left along Chapel Street to reach Stockport Road, where we go left, cross and turn right down Albert Street to reach the meeting point outside Levenshulme station....
Hugh Hudson
A tour of Stockport's urban parks is nice, but I was constantly looking for the next left or right, it's a tedious way to walk!...
Lauren G
Going around the back of the hospital is a nice detour away from that road and brings you out right into the centre of Cheadle. Easy to navigate with a pram, there are ramps available at any points with steps....
Eleanor
Parks, grand houses and a surprising amount of greenery keep you motivated to find out whats around the corner. Good pavement throughout with only one major road to cross. The route ventures through an industrial estate before it ends at the train station....
planroutematt
A pleasant largely off-road route following the path of the River Mersey following a shared use path along (signposted) national cycle route (NCN) 62/Trans Pennine Trail. Cross the A560 at the pedestrian crossing & head right to cross the River Mersey on the King Street West Bridge & still on NCN62; take a left up Chestergate, right up Viaduct Street, left up Daw Bank, right up Exchange Street past the Garrick Theatre to turn right at the traffic lights opposite Stockport Central Library; along Wellington Street South (A6) & then right at the next lights along Station Road to reach the train station....
Martin B
The deviser of the route has given a really detailed description, which I won't go over again, other than to say that this does go through St Thomas's Rec and Woodbank Memorial Park, but I didn't encounter any gates that get locked at dusk as you sometimes see in city parks....
Lauren G
Large parts of this follow the Transpennine Trail - the route is about half paved, half wide well-maintained dirt track (but would be bumpy if you were e.g. pushing a pram)....
Lauren G
Note that the close up photo of the gate at Romiley Station southbound line is not on this, or any of the routes to/from Romiley....
nightauk
The majority is on the Trans Pennine Trail, which is about half gravel and half paved in this area, and open to walkers, bikes and horses....
Lauren G
The last stretch near Hazel Grove passes through an industrial park, (photo 3) but this is a public road with appropriate pavement, and I was there on the weekend so it was very quiet. I was going to recommend this route for pushchairs, but unfortunately at Woodsmoor (photo 2) and again at Hazel Grove (photo 4) you need to navigate flights of stairs where the route has to cross the railway....
Lauren G
A pleasant route which is almost all over smooth and compacted surfaces, except for the road either side of Middle Farm which includes small boulders and potholes. Slopes and narrow widths mean that this route would be suitable for some mobility scooters but not for others: for details please see survey....
Ian V
This is the fist time I've given a 5-star review and it's a route of my devising so definitely needs some more opinions and photos of the park and rural sections...

A great route mainly following an old railway line and the river Mersey between Didsbury and Stockport. Option to take in more of the river if you head south at green pastures. Mostly firm ground, gravel and tarmac, all well drained but often some puddles when wet on the first section next to the tram line....
Guesty
However, the route starts from the east end of the station so it is best to commence east, avoiding the lower level which can be busy....
nightauk
The descent to the River Goyt is broad and fairly steep with a bend (photo 1 looking back). The entrance to the footpath on the bend of the river is difficult to find and a bit of a scramble for older people up a loose earth bank with a flight of wooden steps and no handrail (photo 5). This deviation is longer than the field path but obviously the route preferred by the local landowners and council and it is well-used, popular and well signposted (photo 9 looking back from the A627). StoRom 1 then has a toucan crossing, with Romiley rail station signposted (photo 11), to access Vale Road, which has a sealed surface. I don’t recommend the StoRom 1 route from the first corner of Vale Road where, ignoring the pedestrian/cycle signpost to the station along Vale Road, the route continues through a bridleway gate and horse facility and then a second bridleway gate (photo 12). Access is some meters along the main path up three substantial flights of steps (photo 13, see OSM at this point) to access the Peak Forest canal....
nightauk
Steps lead up to the road: turn right here (King Street West) and then left at the first traffic lights. The long flight of steps up to Station Road was also closed off (March 2022) so it was necessary to continue up Exchange Street, turn right onto the main road, Wellington Road South (the A6), and then right onto Station Road, which leads to Stockport Railway Station on the right....

Ian V added Levsto two, a new walk from Levenshulme to Stockport
Walk this routeThis route mostly avoids the main road, using side streets and green spaces that regular travellers from Stockport to Manchester may have never seen....
