Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

23 Jun 2023 (edited 21 Jun 2023) Summer

A walk on a rainy day from Stockport Train station to Hazel Grove Station. Mainly flat other than a section at the beginning up to the War Memorial and Art Centre. Past our ladies catholic church which is spectacular. Walking through Shaw Heath past shops onto Cale Green, Cale green park is not to be missed in any weather and a local popular dog park. Back onto the main road and onto Mirless fields, access to stepping hill via this route is tricky if on a mobility scooter or wheelchair. BAck onto the A6 right through the end at Hazel grove station.
I would walk it again but take more time to visit the church and to spend more time in the parks.

Lovely walk and safe route , easily accessible for wheelchair use, ideal to take children, would highly recommend.

A pleasant walk through the suburbs of Stockport. Parks, grand houses and a surprising amount of greenery keep you motivated to find out whats around the corner. Good pavement throughout with only one major road to cross. The route ventures through an industrial estate before it ends at the train station.

A largely flat, almost entirely paved semi-urban walk. I like that it visits Cale Green Park (photo 1) and Mirrlees Fields (photo 5), without going too far out of its way, and that it avoids the A6 wherever possible. Interactions with other roads are unavoidable in this area, but all have safe crossing points. The last stretch near Hazel Grove passes through an industrial park, (photo 3) but this is a public road with appropriate pavement, and I was there on the weekend so it was very quiet.

I was going to recommend this route for pushchairs, but unfortunately at Woodsmoor (photo 2) and again at Hazel Grove (photo 4) you need to navigate flights of stairs where the route has to cross the railway. As this is unavoidable given the railway running right down the middle of the route, I'm not knocking a star off.

GPX note: where the route passes by Stockport Grammar School, the GPX suggests you should cross the A6 to walk on the other side for a few hundred yards. The other side IS nicer, with trees, but it's not worth the two difficult road crossings. I didn't bother. Other than this, the GPX has no issues.

Apologies for the typically Mancunian weather in my photographs!.
