From my point of view, this route deserves five stars due to it being direct, interesting, off busy main roads for the large part, safe (during daylight hours at least) and accessible. I walked it from Manchester to Levenshulme in just over an hour with a pram with no issues. Good bus links and shops for supplies en route too....

There are a couple of access issues with this route as currently plotted. At the Gorton end, the footpath by the station is impassable but easily avoided. At the Levenshulme end the path tries to take you through some back-allies behind terraced housing which are gated....

It is almost entirely off-road initially following the path of the former Stockport branch canal before joining the Fallowfield Loop cycle path along a disused railway line. There is an excellent cafe-bar, 'Station South' which occupies an old station building where the path meets the A6. It is then a short walk along the road past lots of shops and bars to reach Levenshulme station....
RGW
The second half, from Wilmslow Road to Platt Lane is along the road and uninspiring....
RGW
Excellent transport links at either end thanks to Levenshulme train station, Didsbury tram stop and numerous bus routes....

Start in Levy with good train station and very regular bus service (and find watering holes such as Station Hop) passing over the an old railway line which is now a popular cycle path ('The followfield loop') passing Burnage Station ('Reasons to be Cheerful' is a great watering hole close to Fog Lane Park) and ending in Didsbury (plenty of refreshment points) which has a station and good tram and bus service. Certainly recommend both Didsbury and Levy as interesting places to visit? - Yes, as Levy has some interesting social points?...

Not much to add, an easy urban route well documented in previous reviews. I'm reserving 5 stars for special routes, though I'd give certainly give my day walking with everyone 5 stars :)...
Dan Barron
An easy to follow urban route, mostly on pavements with the occasional park. Transport connections and facilities never seem far away....

I walked this as part of the group so I don't need to duplicate what has been said. A Slow Way that achieves being direct and a wonderful tour with many points of interest along the way. Well done Mary and thanks for the commentary along the way....
Ken
Here in a very urban setting I'm not sure this route works but wouldn't fail it, there are some good interesting and enjoyable parts but they are so different....
Ken
(There were some bollards at Park Grove in Levenshulme which would restrict the width of the route.)....
Mary Oz
The route left Stockport Station and soon crossed underneath, then alongside the monumental Stockport Viaduct, apparently the largest brick viaduct in the UK with about eleven million bricks, and also past the bus depot....
Mary Oz
A direct, safe, interest rich and enjoyable walk....
David Sanderson
Mainly pavement with the occasional park path....

We go left then right onto Central Avenue, then take the path half right and left to reach Slade Lane, where we turn right, cross and turn half left along Hamilton Road, which we follow to Dickenson Road. We turn right onto Carmoor Road then right along the near edge of Swinton Grove Park, then left through the park to reach Swinton Grove and Elizabeth Gaskell's house, where we go right a short distance then left onto Plymouth Grove....

Walk this routeWe attempted to walk LEVSTO 2 from Stockport to Levenshulme yesterday, but were thwarted a little by two building projects north of Stockport station which have closed two of the paths and roads closest to the railway on the east side. Rather than submitting the slightly longer diversion we eventually followed, this is my attempt to provide a more direct route from Stockport station into the shopping centre on Princes Street where we rejoin LEVSTO 2. For a detailed review with pictures see LEVSTO 2....

Walk this routeLeaving the meeting point outside Stockport station, we go north onto Station Road and almost immediately hit the first problem - the path across the corner is fenced off for building work, so we were forced to follow the road out to Wellington Road South, then go left down Exchange Road to rejoin the route. We follow the TransPennine Trail signs right up Parsonage Street then left along an alleyway that leads back to Wellington Road North, where we turn right and follow the main road for some distance. Beyond the cutting the path goes left to reach Broom Lane, which we cross and go right then left along Chapel Street to reach Stockport Road, where we go left, cross and turn right down Albert Street to reach the meeting point outside Levenshulme station....

The route then enters the Fallowfield Loop and follows this paved walking route almost to the end, where you exit the FLoop and walk to Levenshulme where again, there are lots of cafes and shops....

I liked Fogg Lane Park, and the broad, tree lined Errwood Road....
