Help connect Pengam
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Pengam’s Slow Ways.

The first half being the road from Pengam to Gelligaer and the section along Heol Adam, which is a mountain road, but very busy on the day of my walk....

The only slight issue is it directs you down a path marked private property at the end of The Rise, but this is easily remedied if you stay on Edward Road and follow the path at the end round...

As previously mentioned, the GPX is not quite right by the allotments in Pengam, the actual footpath is a little farther up the road...

Takes an older mud-route from Ystrad to Cefn Hengoed, despite the nearby completed tarmac pathway past Cwm Calon. Nevertheless the route is a lot more interesting than that newer one....

Although it`s a woodland park, there are lots of glades and meadows and the path alongside the River Rhymney is lovely. Photo 2 - One of several bridges over the River Rhymney Photo 7 - View across the Rhymney Valley from Bargoed...

The other area of note is the area around bridge over the River Rhymney (Photos 4 and 5) and the path leading up to the main road in Pengam. Most of this route is suitable for wheels, but the stretch after the bridge over the River Rhymney is fairly steep and uneven with steps at the top....

Lost a star because of the walk up to Gelligaer from Pengam (which I've never been a fan of) but from Gelligaer onwards the walk is great. No problems with the route, but lots of stiles, kissing gates and mud so not suitable for wheels....

You could make it easier by walking from Bargoed Station to morrisons petrol station down the pavement and joining the route there....

Good views of the ruins of the old Penally colliery, but two busy crossings of the A469, could be avoided by just walking along the pavement between Pengam and Tir-y-berth but not as nice. When you come out of Pengam station and cross the main road, the route seems to go through the allotments but the public footpath is slightly to the left. Could be easy to miss....
