Help connect Blackwood
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Blackwood’s Slow Ways.

The only slight issue is it directs you down a path marked private property at the end of The Rise, but this is easily remedied if you stay on Edward Road and follow the path at the end round...

The only down side of this walk is the part alongside the busy A472 road, until it reaches the former railway line part of the path at Maesycwmmer, then leading over Hengoed viaduct and on into Ystrad Mynach....

but nice walk there, maybe a bit muddy or uneven underfoot but relatively flat, no steps. A little muddy but mostly flat and well surfaced....

Bargoed Woodland Park really is a gem and most of this walk is within this park. Photo 1 - View across the Rhymney Valley from Bargoed Photo 2 - The northern end of Bargoed Woodland Park...

After crossing Blackwood High Street and leaving behind the hussle and bustle of the town, the path crosses the River Sirhowy (Photo 1) and passes through a housing estate, before crossing the A4048 road (take care here as there is no dedicated crossing place). The walk through these lanes gives some lovely views across the fields to Pentwynmawr and Newbridge (Photo 4), The path then crosses more fields (Photo 5), before descending into the top end of Newbridge....

It then opens up into a meadow (Photo 3), which is part of the Sir Harold Finch Memorial Park. After crossing the busy Blackwood Road / Libanus Road junction, the path leads through another small park (Photo 4), after which it`s just a short stretch through the back streets to Blackwood bust station....

The other area of note is the area around bridge over the River Rhymney (Photos 4 and 5) and the path leading up to the main road in Pengam. Most of this route is suitable for wheels, but the stretch after the bridge over the River Rhymney is fairly steep and uneven with steps at the top....

Short, practical, unremarkable walk linking Blackwood and Pontllanfraith....

It was never going to be the prettiest of walks, very urban through housing estates etc....

The public rights of way on the OS map do not match what actually happens on the ground and you end up following a track that leads through someone's garden, definitely private land....
