09 Sep 2023September 2023. Direction: Ystrad Mynach to Pengam.
An easy to navigate route and a lovely walk up the Nant Cylla valley and then over the top and down into the Rhymney Valley. The mountain path is quite narrow in parts, but it`s a well used and well defined path. Most of the rest of the route is tarmac, the exception being the footpath leading from the River Rhymney up to the A469, which also has around 20 steps at the top just before reaching the road (200 metres from Pengam station).

25 Jul 2023Walked from Pengam to Ystrad Mynach. A nice walk which is mostly off-road and pretty straightforward to follow. As previously mentioned, the GPX is not quite right by the allotments in Pengam, the actual footpath is a little farther up the road.

05 Mar 2023Takes an older mud-route from Ystrad to Cefn Hengoed, despite the nearby completed tarmac pathway past Cwm Calon.
Nevertheless the route is a lot more interesting than that newer one. Walk up the Greig, with a view across to Parc Penallta. Plenty of animals: goats, horses etc, to see along the way. Maybe not so good when weather is bad, ground would be muddy.
Pass across to Tir y Berth and pass close to railway. See some iron/copper stained water and junk around it, interesting IMHO.
Some more animals to see. Goats with big beards.
Then on to Pengam, sandwich shop at apex of route.

12 May 2021A mixed walk through housing and industrial estates, farms and common land. Good views of the ruins of the old Penally colliery, but two busy crossings of the A469, could be avoided by just walking along the pavement between Pengam and Tir-y-berth but not as nice.
When you come out of Pengam station and cross the main road, the route seems to go through the allotments but the public footpath is slightly to the left. Could be easy to miss.
