Help connect New Milton

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of New Milton’s Slow Ways.

Once you reach Ashley @ 1.25 miles, there is a short section along a main road with busy traffic in both directions with no verge or footpath. This path leads to a rickety stile which then leads onto open New Forest heath. There are gentle up and down gradients for the first half mile of open land, but it’s easy to pick the wrong track and enter areas of dense bracken and gorse. On reaching Worthys Farm you are back on the main road through the New Forest. Along the road you reach Culverley Green (pic 13) where there is a cattle grid then open track. Avoiding the obvious main road route it takes you along a series of grubby lanes along the back of gardens and across a footbridge over the railway line (pic 14) and then through further overgrown and very narrow lanes. (pic 15) Eventually you reach the other main road into Brockenhurst (this is on the other side of the railway track) This road leads up to the level crossing and then the station I think the last section of the walk from Culverley Green to Brockenhurst Station through these lanes and then a possibly dangerous stretch of main road should be reconsidered and perhaps amended Despite reservations I still recommend this route as it’s a good and varied walk across the New Forest...

On 21 August 2023, I walked this route as part of the National Parks Trail. - The coastal walk from Mudeford to Highcliffe is fine, but a lot of the route is soft sand, making walking tiring....

Some of the roads were unpaved albeit mostly quiet roads. Once away from the centre of New Milton the area opened up into quiet residential roads and countryside and eventually over the cattle grids into the New Forest....

The first part (or last depending on where you start) between New Milton and Ashley is a little un eventful as you walk along residential streets, however once you turn into brick hills lane it suddenly feels like a more rural open air walk. There is no footpath along a large part of Brickhills lane and it is used often by cars, so care is needed as not all drivers follow the 30mph limit. Beyond that it is a really great rural route, most of it being quite suitable for those with wheels....

Most of it very accessible although very last bit of chewton bunny - slope leading up to A337 a little uneven and might me tricky with those who are using wheels- see photo. If using wheels, when entering chewton bunny from Highcliffe cliff top, go as far as little bridge where stream disappears underground and take left fork of path (sloping upwards) to avoid large stairs a bit further along trail....

Loved the variety of this slow way including the coast, new forest countryside and through the beautiful town of lymington. The only disappointing section was the approach in to Lymington that was on a path but beside a busy road....

It's a lovely tranquil route in places leading you through the New Forest, however the paths aren't that clearly marked in places and it was quite boggy in January....

Once the A337, Milford Road is reached the walk is along a busy main road which is not easy to cross (there is only a footpath on one side). On reaching the High Street the walk becomes more interesting again....

This route then comes to a bit of weak ending after leaving Newbridge Copse where it joins the main A road into Lymington. Although there is a separate pavement away from the road this is still a busy A road with fast traffic - sometimes tricky to cross....
