Help connect Malham

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Malham’s Slow Ways.

The route continues through countless sheep enclosures downhill (photo #4) again and joins a paved road. A narrow footpath from Threshfield is shown on photo #5. The final tens of meters in Grassington leads via a very narrow path between houses and it's easy to miss (see photo #6 taken from the Main Street)....

Most of the route was the same as AirMal One, but near Town End Farm I crossed only a tiny tributary, and not the River Aire....

I started from Airton (having just walked from Hellifield), and followed the initial, pretty, and nicely managed Riverside Walk footpath on the west of the River Aire, but took a detour to have some lunch at the Town End Farm Shop Café, which was very nice with a view of Malham Cove....

The last section of tarmac, steeply down into Settle, was slightly busier, but with lovely views into the town. I suspect staying on the Dales High Way and coming into Settle from the north east would be a better route, and I might try it sometime!...

Walk this route

Yesterday I actually walked HelMal One from Hellifield, but I have previously walked the different section, from Grid Ref SD 86654 57958 to Otterburn via Dacre Lane, when I reviewed HelGar Two, and I much prefer it. It had better views, a more definite path, and is drier with no cows. For more details see my review of HelMal One....

This turned into a field track as I gained height, and I could look back at great views of Hellifield with Pendle Hill beyond. The route turned off into a field which contained sheep and bullocks. From here a well-used footpath led into Malham village, which was very busy with visitors....
